Jason Watkins and Robson Green’s new British detective drama The Game starts on TV tonight.

The initial episode of the four-part series is scheduled to broadcast on Channel 5 at 9 pm tonight. Subsequent episodes will air every night this week, culminating in the final show on Thursday, 15th May.

Originally known as “Catch You Later“, the movie “The Game” features Watkins in the role of Huw Miller, an ex-detective who can’t shake off a cold case where a ruthless serial killer played twisted mind games with his victims before taking their lives.

Yet, upon Green’s neighbor, Patrick Harbottle moving in, and his ominous utterance of “I’ll catch up with you later” – a chilling phrase the killer had used to tease Huw during the investigation – Huw becomes convinced that Patrick is indeed the murderer.

The story unfolds with a thrilling mental battle of chess, played out subtly between neighbors. As Huw’s life starts to disintegrate, tension escalates.

Tormented by the weight of a stalker preying on another innocent soul, Huw dares to uncover the truth at great personal risk. However, is the person he’s targeting truly the culprit, or is his fixation leading him dangerously astray?

Actress Sunetra Sarker, known for her role in Casualty, additionally appears in the series The Game – a suspenseful cat-and-mouse chase story – portraying Huw’s spouse.

Earlier, when Green discussed the series with Deadline, he mentioned that the way his character says “see you later” seems to prompt Huw to delve more deeply.

“Patrick is over-friendly, and Huw feels everything is not quite what it seems,” he continued.

It becomes apparent quite soon that a game is unfolding, yet the question remains: Is Patrick acting suspiciously, perhaps even a stalker, or is Huw merely perceiving things inaccurately, possibly due to psychological turmoil?

In this captivating series, it’s fascinating to see Huw, skillfully portrayed by Jason, yielding to circumstances. The question arises as to whether Patrick, who seems genuinely concerned for Huw’s well-being, is merely a kind soul or if he is subtly manipulating him psychologically. Viewers will be left pondering his true intentions.

The Game airs on Channel 5.
