Jason Voorhees’ Friday The 13th Return Teased By Series Creator: “He Did Have Another Mask…”

The person who came up with the idea for Crystal Lake has talked about whether Jason Voorhees might be in the new show. The series, coming to Peacock and produced by A24, takes place before the events of the Friday the 13th movies.

The show will tell the story of Pamela Voorhees, Jason’s mother, focusing on her life before the events of the first Friday the 13th movie. Pamela was the killer in the original film, and the show will explore her background before her son became the main villain in the sequels.

Brad Caleb Kane, the creator and showrunner of Crystal Lake, spoke with Ash Crossan from ScreenRant at the IT: Welcome to Derry premiere about the possibility of Jason Voorhees appearing in the Peacock series. He confirmed that Linda Cardellini is playing Mrs. Voorhees, but remained tight-lipped about Jason himself, stating he couldn’t confirm or deny Jason’s involvement.

He suggested Jason Voorhees could return, stating he wouldn’t want to make another Friday the 13th movie without him.

He’s pretty sure Jason Voorhees won’t be wearing his famous hockey mask in the new series. Although the mask is a key part of the character’s look, Jason didn’t get it until the third Friday the 13th movie in 1982. That film takes place over a decade after the original events at Crystal Lake.

Kane pointed out that Jason had worn different masks in previous films and reminded everyone of the story’s origins – Jason as a young boy who drowned in Crystal Lake. He hinted that the show might explore this backstory, focusing on the relationship between Jason’s mother and son, and what happened after the drowning.

I’m still trying to figure out how the story explains things. It started with Mrs. Voorhees seeking revenge because her son, Jason, tragically drowned. But then, things got really strange when Jason actually came back as a grown man in Friday the 13th Part 2! It’s a bit of a puzzle how they connect those two things.

Kane is probably talking about the burlap sack with one eyehole that Jason wears in Part 2 before switching to the hockey mask for the rest of the Friday the 13th films. It’s likely this was the mask young Jason liked to wear the most.

Since most of the Crystal Lake story happens after Jason drowns as a child, it’s quite possible he never actually shows up in the films.

According to Kane’s outline, the show will likely focus on Mrs. Voorhees dealing with her sorrow and planning to kill counselors Barry and Claudette. This happens a year after the death of her son, Jason, and before they are killed in the opening scenes of the first movie.

Considering Kane’s hesitant response, it’s likely Jason will appear in flashbacks, helping to show who Pamela Voorhees was in Crystal Lake. As a key figure in the Friday the 13th series and central to Pamela’s motivations, he’ll be important to her story, even if he isn’t physically present for all of it.
