Jason Sudeikis offers touching tribute to uncle George Wendt after his passing at 76
Over the weekend, Jason Sudeikis returned to his native Kansas City to host the yearly Big Slick charity event. During this time, he shared some personal stories about his late uncle, George Wendt.
On May 20, the well-loved actor from Cheers passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 76. Many stars, including his fellow cast members like Ted Danson, offered heartfelt tributes to honor his memory.
During a press conference held on Friday, prior to the Big Slick Celebrity Weekend fundraiser for Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Sudeikis was questioned about his family member.
Following his comment that he was a ‘remarkable individual’, there was a sudden interruption in the audio, presumably because he playfully fiddled with the sound equipment, mimicking, “‘I don’t want you to speak about me, stop discussing me.’
In simpler terms, Sudeikis was saying that Wendt isn’t like the typical people who may disappoint you when you meet them, which is often implied in the phrase “Don’t meet your heroes.” However, he didn’t express any concerns about being let down by Wendt.
Sudeikis stated that his uncle was just as entertaining, friendly, and welcoming as any character he portrayed in TV shows or movies.

He had a profound impact on me, not only as a fellow trailblazer, but also as a mentor hailing from the Midwest who showed me that acting could be a viable career, provided one is truly passionate about it.
Sudeikis went on to say, “He consistently maintained ties with his family and his hometown, not only Chicago, but also Kansas City, where he attended Rockhurst University.
In a joking manner, Sudeikis mentioned that he frequently visited a place named Mike’s Bar, which might have added up to around 18 college credits worth of time spent there.
However, everything was leading up to the role he’s famously known for, here’s to that! Time invested was truly worthwhile. Yet, we deeply mourn his absence, and my affection for him remains unchanged.
Jon Sudeikis assists in coordinating the yearly event alongside other well-known individuals from Kansas City such as Rob Riggle, Paul Rudd, Eric Stonestreet, Heidi Gardner, and occasionally Wendt.
Riggle stated, “To make things clear, you’re aware of this too as an observer, George was always eager to get involved. Regardless of his role at Big Slick – whether he was refereeing the game or performing on stage – he was consistently active and engaging. He had a contagious laugh and was always enjoyable to be near.
As a devoted follower, I must say that Wendt’s absence will undoubtedly leave a significant void among us. He has been an integral part of our group, contributing just as much as anyone else. Truly, he is an exceptionally kind soul whom I held in high regard. I fondly recall the warmth and camaraderie his presence brought to our collective.
The weekend comes to an end with a star-studded softball match, and Sudeikis pays tribute to his uncle by donning a Kansas City Royals shirt bearing the number 76, signifying Wendt.

In June, Wendt made an appearance on the Still Here Hollywood podcast alongside Steve Kmetko. During the conversation, Wendt praised his nephew Sudeikis as both “extremely intelligent” and “deeply considerate.
Wendt expressed deep pride, not just about his accomplishments, but also about his integrity. He’s quite a remarkable person, as you can see if you’ve read profiles or articles about him,” Wendt stated.
He too remembered the interview with Sudeikis, where they discussed if his uncle ever offered career guidance.
Jason confidently replied, “He instructed me to appear on the top-rated TV show and one of the best series ever produced. So, that’s exactly what I did.” He then joined Saturday Night Live, as Wendt stated.
