Jason Statham’s “brilliantly gritty” crime thriller with Sherwood star gets new UK streaming home

I was so excited to find out one of my favorite Jason Statham thrillers is now streaming in the UK! Okay, so the critics weren’t blown away when it first came out, but honestly, it’s just a really fun ride. Everyone agrees Statham is fantastic in it – he totally nails the action hero role, doing what he does best. The acting really stood out to people, even if the movie itself didn’t get rave reviews.

The film is 2011’s Blitz, and it’s now on Prime Video.

This British action film, unrelated to the 2024 movie with the same title, is adapted from a 2002 Ken Bruen novel. It centers on a tough police officer’s pursuit of a serial killer in southeast London.

I was stoked to see who’s acting alongside Jason Statham in this new movie! Paddy Considine, who I loved in Pride, is in it, as is Aiden Gillen from Game of Thrones. Zawe Ashton, who was hilarious in Fresh Meat, is there too, and Mark Rylance, a seriously talented actor with two Olivier Awards, is joining the cast. It’s a pretty awesome lineup!

David Morrissey, known for his role in Sherwood, also stars as a journalist who collaborates with the killer.

The movie Blitz received a lukewarm reception, earning a 48% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics generally agree it’s a fairly standard crime thriller that doesn’t offer much new, though Jason Statham delivers a strong performance.

The Evening Standard praised the performances of the three lead actors – Jason Statham, Stephen Graham, and Richard Gillen – as powerful and captivating. They also highlighted the work of young cinematographer Robert Hardy, noting his skillful focus on the actors’ expressions.

Both Empire and Hot Press praised the film Blitz. Empire called it a classic Jason Statham crime thriller, highlighting his strengths in the genre. Hot Press gave it a four-star rating, describing it as clever, shocking, funny, and action-packed, with a script and pace that turned a basic story into a compelling and morally complex tale.

Jason Statham has several upcoming projects, including the 2026 action thriller Shelter. In the film, he plays a retired hitman who must dismantle his old organization to safeguard a woman who used to work with him.

Bill Nighy, Naomi Ackie, and Daniel Mays star in the new film directed by Ric Roman Waugh, scheduled for release on January 30, 2026.

He recently finished filming Mutiny, a movie where he plays a former Special Forces operative working as a security professional. The story centers around him being wrongly accused of killing a wealthy friend from Thailand. The film also stars Annabelle Wallis, Jason Wong, and Adrian Lester, and is scheduled for release on August 21, 2026.

Blitz is streaming on Prime Video in the UK.
