Jason Statham and Sylvester Stallone are two incredibly famous action movie stars, so whenever they work together, people pay attention. They famously appeared together in The Expendables films, but the 2013 thriller Homefront was a unique collaboration. Now, over ten years later, this often-overlooked movie is gaining popularity again as one of the top films on Netflix.
Directed by Gary Fleder, the action thriller Homefront—based on the novel by Chuck Logan—features Jason Statham as Phil Broker, a former DEA agent trying to live a quiet life with his daughter. Their peaceful existence is shattered when a dangerous drug lord (James Franco) threatens them, forcing Broker to use his skills to protect his family and deliver his own form of justice.
Sylvester Stallone didn’t act in Homefront, but he wrote the screenplay. This isn’t new for him – he’s been writing movies since Rocky in 1976. He’s penned many screenplays over the years, including A Working Man (2025) with David Ayer, which also stars Jason Statham.
‘Homefront’ Was Supposed To Be a ‘Rambo’ Sequel
Currently a top three movie on Netflix, Homefront features Winona Ryder, Kate Bosworth, and Frank Grillo alongside Jason Statham. It’s a fast-paced, action-packed thriller reminiscent of 90s films, where a quiet father transforms into a force of vengeance. Statham’s character shares similarities with John Rambo, which isn’t surprising considering Homefront was originally planned as another installment in the Rambo series.
Sylvester Stallone initially wrote the script with himself in the lead role, envisioning Rambo protecting his daughter from dangerous drug lords. But the project was shelved for almost ten years, and Stallone eventually decided he was too old to play the part. He revised the script and offered it to Jason Statham. Fortunately, Statham understood the essence of the character. In a 2013 interview with Yahoo, he explained that there’s only one true Rambo.
I’d never be able to play a character like Rambo. If someone offered me the role, I’d have to decline. I simply couldn’t live up to that standard – he’s incredibly skilled. While I brought some of myself to the part, Sylvester Stallone really shaped it to fit me. It’s just impossible to be that kind of hero, and he understood that.
‘Homefront’ Is Jason Statham Doing What He Does Best
Critics weren’t thrilled with Homefront – it only received a 42% score on Rotten Tomatoes – but audiences enjoyed it much more, giving it a 61% rating. While it’s not Jason Statham’s greatest film, it’s certainly not the worst. Many viewers described it as a fast-paced, exciting action movie, and some were pleasantly surprised by James Franco’s performance as Gator Bodine.
