Jason Statham returning for a sequel to action hit The Beekeeper – with one big change
Jason Statham is officially returning for a sequel to the 2024 action hit The Beekeeper.
As reported by Deadline, horror-action filmmaker Timo Tjahjanto has been appointed as the new director for the upcoming sequel, replacing David Ayer in that role.
Statham is coming back to action movies, with Tjahjanto taking charge as the director. The script for this film was crafted by Kurt Winner, who originally wrote it.
The initial film garnered widespread acclaim from both critics and audiences, earning a staggering $162.6 million worldwide and securing a 71% positive rating on the aggregator platform, Rotten Tomatoes.
Filming is set to start this fall, and both the production team and studio are aiming to involve director Ayer once again, as he is now busy working on the Brad Pitt film titled “The Heart of the Beast”. This reunion with Ayer will likely be in some role or another.
Tjahjanto showcases a remarkable assortment of Indonesian films on Netflix such as “The Shadow Strays”, “The Night Comes for Us”, and “The Big Four”. He’s now busy working on the sequel, “Nobody 2”, alongside Bob Odenkirk.
Under the guidance of director Ayer, the movie titled “The Beekeeper” unfolds the tale of Adam Clay, a former agent from the clandestine group known as “The Beekeepers,” who has since taken up the role of an authentic beekeeper.
Following the tragic death of his generous landlady Eloise (played by Phylicia Rashad), who took her own life after being deceived in a phishing scheme that drained her charitable funds and personal savings, he seeks retribution against those culpable for this crime.
Earlier in a review, Digital Spy commented that Statham performing his own stunts gives a gritty texture to the fight scenes. Furthermore, he has mastered this genre so well that he delivers lines such as: “You have laws for these things until they fail – then you have me,” with great precision.
While it’s possible to point out various elements in the film ‘The Beekeeper‘ that could be criticized, it’s important to remember that this isn’t a movie that deviates from its intended style. It might not be an exceptional film overall, but watching Jason Statham perform his signature roles is certainly enjoyable.
The Beekeeper is available to watch now on Sky Cinema in the UK.
