Layer Cake, a fast-paced gangster movie set in London, was a commercial success when it came out in 2004. It was one of three popular films released around the turn of the century that focused on London’s criminal underworld.
Building on the success of films like Guy Ritchie’s Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, Matthew Vaughn’s movie brought fresh energy to British crime films by blending realistic scenes with dark humor and a cool style.
The film Layer Cake launched the careers of both its director and star. Vaughn received an Empire Award, and Daniel Craig went on to become James Bond.

JJ Connolly, the author of the original Layer Cake, wrote Viva La Madness. The story follows a cocaine dealer hoping to retire, but his boss forces him to complete one last assignment, throwing his plans into chaos.
Jason Statham describes the project as having a darkly comedic tone, but one that’s also stylish and refined.
