Jason Momoa lands surprise new role in DC Universe after playing Aquaman
As a long-time follower and fan of Jason Momoa‘s career, it’s always a thrill to witness his growth within the DC Universe. His transformation from Aquaman to Lobo is not only a testament to his versatility as an actor but also a reminder of the unpredictable nature of Hollywood.
I remember back in 2023 when fans and Momoa himself speculated about him playing Lobo. Now, four years later, his quote from that time, “They called,” brings a sense of full-circle satisfaction. It’s like watching our favorite superheroes evolve, just as our beloved actors do.
I must admit, I was slightly disappointed when the Aquaman franchise seemed to be coming to an end with the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in 2023. But Momoa’s willingness to explore new roles within the DCU has rekindled my hope for more exciting stories to unfold.
In a way, it feels like we, as fans, are embarking on a new adventure with Momoa, this time as the intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo. I can’t wait to see him bring his unique charm and energy to this iconic character.
On a lighter note, I can’t help but wonder what James Gunn meant when he said, “Welcome, my friend.” Is it a friendly greeting or a warning that Lobo is about to cause some chaos in the DCU? Only time will tell!
In a confirmed move, Jason Momoa is set to explore new roles within the DC Universe, having portrayed the beloved character Aquaman for an impressive eight-year tenure.
On a Monday, the 45-year-old actor shared on Instagram that he’s moving away from portraying a superhero and venturing into the role of the antagonist Lobo, in the forthcoming movie “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow”.
In 2023, spectators mused that the Hawaiian celebrity might be considered for the part. However, at that point in time, Momoa stated he hadn’t received a call to portray Lobo, yet would jump at the chance to audition if asked.
Regarding Lobo, he’s always been my top pick. If they ever ask me to perform it, I’d be absolutely thrilled! However, I haven’t yet received that invitation. Therefore, I don’t wish to spread any misinformation.
In a remarkable turn of events, I’ve found myself echoing a quote from 2023 once more. The caption this time was a straightforward, “They reached out.
He’s scheduled to perform with Milly Alcock, who plays the main role, in the movie “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.” The film is set to be released in theaters on June 26, 2026.
In a comment, James Gunn, who directs Superman and is the CEO of DC, warmly welcomed the 6-foot-4 actor back to the DC family: “Hello there, friend!
In June 1983, the character known as “Lobo,” which translates to ‘Wolf’ in English, made its debut in the third issue of Omega Men comic books. This character was ingeniously crafted by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen.
According to a fan’s account, Lobo is a space-faring bounty hunter who hails from the planet Czarnia. He is known for his vibrant language and exceptional ability to rapidly heal, making him a source of annoyance rather than a true danger.
Monday’s declaration marks a significant change for Momoa, as he was the lead actor in the DC Aquaman movies before this.
It’s widely believed that the Aquaman series will conclude with the premiere of “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” in 2023, as actor Jason Momoa hinted that prospects for more movies in this cherished franchise appear uncertain.
‘I love this character and [I would want to] play it for a long time,’ he told ET in December 2023.
He expresses a willingness to carry on as the water-based superhero, yet he currently feels, “Things don’t seem very promising.
Moreover, the actor hinted at his desire to carry on portraying characters within the DC Universe, though in distinct roles instead.
Growing up as a comic book fan, I have always felt a deep connection to the worlds of DC and Warner Bros. These stories have been a constant presence in my life, shaping my imagination and fueling my creativity. So when I had the chance to be a part of this universe, it was like coming home. It’s where my heart lies, and I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else. This is my world, and I am proud to call DC and Warner Bros my home.
Currently, Jason Momoa is shooting a Minecraft movie in New Zealand together with comedian Jack Black. The movie’s first formal trailer has been unveiled following the release of an initial teaser that garnered mixed reactions.
The eagerly awaited movies promise to offer a rich, detailed portrayal of the universe from the renowned video game.
The much-anticipated Minecraft film is set for a global theater release on April 2, 2025, while North American audiences can catch it two days later, on April 4, 2025.
