Jason Donovan has revealed details about his struggle with drug addiction, admitting he once used up to three grams of cocaine daily at its worst.
The 57-year-old former Neighbours actor, who publicly battled addiction in the 1990s, also shared how his substance abuse led to extreme paranoia – he genuinely believed he was being pursued by MI5.
Jason recently shared on Jamie Laing’s podcast that he faced a lot of criticism in the 1990s after honestly admitting on television that he used drugs simply because he enjoyed them.
He remembered periods of heavy cocaine use, saying he would sometimes use for days at a time – starting as early as Thursday and lasting until the following Tuesday or beyond.
It wasn’t a continuous, long-term addiction like heroin; it was more of a sporadic, intense period of use. Eventually, the body will naturally shut down, especially with a drug like cocaine.
People using cocaine often start to experience paranoia about 24 hours after taking it, sometimes believing they are being watched by intelligence agencies like MI5.

Jason remembered that even while struggling with addiction, he often continued to work and could sometimes maintain a healthy lifestyle for days before relapsing.
It was a cycle: you’d feel good for a couple of days, then a nagging voice would tempt you to sabotage your progress and fall back into old patterns. That was the core issue.
He explained that meeting his wife, Angela Malloch, and the birth of their daughter, Jemma (who used to be on Hollyoaks), were the main reasons he decided to change his life.
I was young enough that my body could still heal well. I hadn’t reached the point of no return, and I believed I could recover.
Jason recently shared that he’s advised his children that if they ever experiment with drugs, he’d prefer they do so at home, where he can talk to them about the risks. He made this decision based on his own past struggles with substance abuse and a desire to educate them.
The actor and his wife are also parents to son Zac, 24, and youngest daughter, 14.
Jason recently revealed he continues to have difficulty controlling his alcohol consumption, even after overcoming his struggles with drugs.
He admitted to The Guardian that he actively tries not to overdrink and finds it hard to limit himself to a single glass.

He admitted he sometimes drinks too much. While he doesn’t drink constantly, he enjoys wine and finds it hard to limit himself to just a glass or two.
‘If I overdrink, I don’t feel good about myself.’
In his autobiography, Between The Lines, he described his excessive partying and revealed that his drug dealer was concerned about how much he was using – three grams per day.
When asked if he’d do anything differently, Jason said he wished he’d handled his drug use better. He explained that in the 1990s, he was very self-absorbed and wouldn’t have been aware of the impact his actions had on others.
Jason successfully overcame his previous struggles with addiction and rebuilt his career as a working actor in movies and on stage in the early 2000s.
Last month, the celebrity unexpectedly showed up on the TV show Emmerdale, giving a performance to a packed audience at the Woolpack pub.
The unexpected performance is a special gift for actress Karen Blick, who plays Lydia Dingle, as she’s been a fan of the singer her whole life.
