Jase Hawkins Spills the Tea on Living with Kyle Sandilands: The Unseen Side of Radio’s Odd Couple!

In an open conversation, Jase Hawkins shares insights into the early days of his professional life alongside his radio competitor, Kyle Sandilands.

Initially, the two radio personalities, aged 42 (Nova) and 50 (Sandilands), worked together at Triple M station in Brisbane, before they found themselves vying for control over Melbourne’s morning airwaves.

In 1999, when Sandilands relocated to Sydney’s 2Day FM to take over their Hot30 Countdown, Hawkins decided to join him. For a while, they resided together as roommates.

On the recent episode of the Dos and D podcast, I, a devoted admirer, was granted an exclusive peek behind the scenes of Hawkins’ past dwelling. Contrary to popular belief, their former abode wasn’t nearly as lavish as one might imagine.

‘I was 18. Kyle never went out,’ Hawkins admitted.

On weekends, I’d find myself at the gas station grabbing us some Paddle Pops, then settling in for marathon sessions of Law & Order while surrounded by a haze of smoke.

The radio star added that a ‘big night out’ for the pair was a rare trip to the local video shop.

Occasionally, he’d suggest, “Let’s hit up the video store,” and in response, I’d excitedly declare, “I’m picking out my finest attire!” At 18, I hadn’t ventured out much before that.

Instead of dressing up as if I were heading to a nightclub, I would often don fancy attire just to visit Video Ezy. I carried on this peculiar habit for several years. It was quite intriguing.

Continuing, Jase said the pair would waste hours chatting about their consuming passion – radio.

He’s also passionate about radios,” he mentioned, continuing that our conversations often revolved around this shared interest. He noted that even after moving apart, their discussion about radios remained ongoing.

After I relocated and later started dating my wife Lou, Kyle and I used to visit the same coffee shop each Saturday and Sunday, according to him.

‘His partner at the time and my partner Lou would just be like “oh have we got to keep doing this?”

One day, Kyle told the girls, “You recognize how guys gather and discuss cars, right? Well, that’s exactly what Jase and I are doing with our vehicles.

When queried on his approach towards the existing professional competition between him and his partner, Hawkins responded with a thoughtful and contemplative outlook.

‘I don’t think there’s many douchebags in radio anymore that are s*** canning each other,’ he said.

Kyle enjoys venturing out to give it a try, however, the size of this field is shrinking significantly. I believe everyone is looking out for one another in these circumstances.

After Sandilands criticized his radio co-host, Hawkins responded by referring to him as a “junior colleague” or “assistant with a smaller role” in a broadcast the previous day.

According to Sandilands, it was him who initially provided Hawkins, formerly recognized as Labby, with his first earnings. However, during the start of Hawkins’ career, he was often mistreated, similar to that of a slave.

Jase Hawkins, previously known as Labby, desired a unique identity and sought recognition. As Sandilands put it, ‘He was quite affectionate here, serving as a faithful companion.’

Afterward, Kyle pointed out Jase’s numerous radio jobs that followed their previous stint, implying that he was a fame chaser.

Later on, he aspired to become a famous radio host himself and moved first to Brisbane, but failed. After that, he went to Melbourne, worked for KIIS, but again, it didn’t work out, as Kyle mentioned.

Nevertheless, Jackie pointed out that Kyle had neglected to highlight the fact that Jase had achieved success in New Zealand as well, where he co-hosted Jase & PJ alongside Polly Harding.

As a devoted admirer, let me share my perspective: “Folks, there’s a land down under that many haven’t explored yet – New Zealand. Some may dismiss it as a flop in Australia, but those in the States would counter with, ‘Successful in Australia? Not quite, mate!’

To clarify, the individual eventually managed to make progress and achieved some victories in Melbourne. I must admit, he’s quite talented, but let me stress that I don’t dislike him.

However, it’s important to note that his success seems to be largely due to the “I’m-unfortunate” marketing strategy they employ over there. Essentially, they play up the “we were let go” narrative. But in truth, he was dismissed because the show wasn’t very good.
