As a long-time fan and observer of the television industry, I can’t help but feel a deep sense of disappointment and frustration upon hearing about the sudden cancellation of Jared Padalecki‘s popular CW series “Walker.” Padalecki, known for his iconic roles in shows like “Supernatural,” “Gilmore Girls,” and the recently axed “Walker,” has been an integral part of the CW family since 2005.
Jared Padalecki, an actor recognized for his work on “Supernatural,” “Gilmore Girls,” and the recently terminated “Walker” revival on The CW, has publicly expressed criticism towards the network following the unexpected cancellation of the series.
In an interview with Variety, Padalecki shared his disappointment and frustration over “Walker” being canceled by The CW, despite its strong fan base. He attributed the decision to the network undergoing significant internal changes, which he believed were steering it towards producing less expensive content instead of investing in more substantive programming.
Last month, The CW officially announced the cancellation of “Walker,” the contemporary adaptation of “Walker, Texas Ranger” starring Jared Padalecki as Cordell Walker. This decision was made following The CW’s choice to shift its focus in a different direction, bringing an end to the show after it had finished its fourth season this month.
Padalecki expressed regret over not being able to mourn the end of the show effectively as he was abroad when the announcement was made.
The executive shared that he had conversations with the heads of CBS Studios and Nexstar/CW, as well as other producers of “Walker.” According to him, there’s a rumor that Nexstar is shifting its strategy for the CW network. Instead of putting resources into high-quality programs, they are reportedly opting for cheaper content to air instead.
Thinking back on his over a decade-long association with The CW, starting in 2005 when he joined the cast of “Supernatural” as Sam Winchester, Padalecki voiced his feelings of estrangement from the network’s present course. He characterized The CW during Mark Pedowitz’s tenure as CEO, who stepped down in September 2022, as a distinctly different place compared to its current state.
In an interview with Variety, Padalekci shared his observation: “The CW I belonged to last year isn’t the same one I was a part of during Mark Pedowitz’s long tenure. It seems they’re merely aiming for affordable and effortless content to fill up their schedules.”
Although the disappointing news of the cancellation came up, Padalecki suggested possible future projects, such as teaming up with “Supernatural” creator Eric Kripke again in the last season of “The Boys,” which is streaming on Prime Video.
