As a long-time fan of both the Olympics and video games, especially those with a rich narrative like Nier: Automata, I must say that this year’s Tokyo-themed events have been absolutely exhilarating! The inclusion of Nier: Automata’s music in the swimming routine was nothing short of breathtaking. The intense operatic vocals and booming orchestral arrangements perfectly encapsulated the urgency and grandeur of the global competition.
At the Paris 2024 Olympics, video games and anime have become a common sight. There’s a gymnast adorned with Nintendo tattoos, a sprinter carrying Yu-Gi-Oh cards, and numerous Haikyuu!! fans cheering at volleyball matches. But here’s something fresh: The Japanese Olympic swimming team recently performed an elaborate routine synchronized to music from Nier: Automata during their Tuesday performance.
On Tuesday, during the team free swim segment, the Japanese Olympic swimming team synchronized their performance to music from the video game “Nier: Automata” as part of their routine. The choreography was designed to represent moves on a chessboard, culminating in a symbolic depiction of victory. As reported by Andrea Holland on NBC, the aim was to express the dynamic movement of chess pieces gracefully within the water.
In this performance, they chose the piece “A Beautiful Song” from the game, which seemed incredibly fitting. The powerful operatic vocals combined with the grandiose orchestral arrangement added an intense sense of urgency suitable for high-stakes competition. Furthermore, the swift and edgy movements of the swimmers submerged perfectly mirrored the song’s overwhelming character. For a glimpse of it, check out the short video below.

While some may recognize Nier: Automata for its quirky director, Yoko Taro, or the hyperfeminine android character, 2B, the game offers so much more than just these elements. The music, crafted by Keiichi Okabe along with composers Keigo Hoashi and Kuniyuki Takahashi, produces a soundtrack that beautifully encapsulates both tranquil instances of solitude and the harshness of its post-apocalyptic setting. This score is a must-listen even if you’re not playing the game. If you haven’t experienced it yet, I strongly suggest giving it a try.
