Janet Jackson on dealing with loss of brother Michael Jackson 15 years after his death: ‘It’s still emotional listening to him every night, seeing him, remembering us’
As a dedicated fan of Janet Jackson, I can only imagine the depth of emotions she experiences each time she performs “Scream” alongside her late brother Michael‘s video footage. Fifteen years after his untimely death, Janet continues to keep Michael’s memory alive through their iconic collaboration.
Janet Jackson shares insights about how she deals with the passing of her older brother Michael Jackson, who died in June 2009 – fifteen years later.
In an interview with the BBC, the 58-year-old singer-actress spoke about their 1995 project “Scream,” which marked Michael’s first significant release following the child sexual abuse allegations against him in 1993. These accusations had a profound effect on his personal life and career.
During her Together Again tour, the Grammy-award winning artist sings the song on stage in harmony with videos of her deceased brother. It’s a moving experience for her to listen to him nightly, see him, and remember the past.
In an interview, the entertainer born in Gary, Indiana recalled writing the song with her deceased brother in New York City, specifically in his apartment.
Janet shared how she still experiences that past event vividly, remembering “his musical performances from that time” and thinking about “the challenges he faced during his efforts to restore his name and profession” in the face of harmful allegations.

“Being his younger sister and constantly there for him, providing support, has always been my part,” Janet explained.
In the song “Track,” Michael expressed his annoyance and exhaustion over the aftermath of the allegations and the excessive media attention. The lyrics conveyed his frustration with deceitfulness and asked, “What does this signify, for God’s sake?”
In her self-named 2022 Lifetime documentary series, Janet expressed about her deceased brother, “I believe Mike was dealing with a great deal, and it was heavily affecting him.”
As a lifestyle expert, I’d put it this way: “I’m thrilled to share that the song reached an impressive fifth position on the Billboard Hot 100, staying strong for seventeen weeks in a row. And here’s the cherry on top – it was honored with the Best Music Video award at the prestigious 1996 Grammys!”
In the music video, shot in black and white, the renowned sibling duo harmonized together on screen. However, according to Janet, sharing the stage with her siblings wasn’t simple; industry bigwigs tried to keep them from performing together.
In the year 2022, Janet expressed how challenging it was for her and Michael. “He worked at night; I worked during the day,” she explained. The record company took measures to ensure I couldn’t observe his work, keeping his entire setup hidden from me. They preferred my absence on set.
I’ve experienced situations where I felt like being pitted against someone else in a competitive setting. It wasn’t a pleasant feeling, especially when I believed we were supposed to be working together towards a common goal. This dynamic left me hurt and disheartened. Instead of collaboration, it felt like we were fighting each other, which was never my intention.
During the making of the video, Janet expressed that her feelings of longing and sentimentality towards working with her sibling didn’t live up to her expectations.

She expressed her disappointment in the docuseries, saying, “I had hoped it would bring back the feeling of the good old days between us. But unfortunately, those days are long gone.”
As a devoted fan and follower of Janet’s illustrious music career, I was moved by her candid interview with the BBC. She didn’t shy away from discussing the sexism she encountered throughout her journey to stardom, despite achieving tremendous success with albums like Control (1986), Rhythm Nation 1814 (1989), janet (1993), The Velvet Rope (1997), and All for You (2001), among others.
She shared that in her profession, she was frequently discouraged with comments like, “Girls can’t do that,” but her response was always, “Why not? Let’s give it a try.”
Michael Jackson passed away on June 25, 2009, at the age of 50 due to a heart stoppage caused by an excessive Propofol dosage.
A biographical film about Michael’s life, produced by Lionsgate and titled “Michael,” is being developed with Jaafar Jackson set to portray him.
