Janelle Monae Stuns in Wacky Cartoonish Outfit at Costume Designers Guild Awards

At the 27th Annual Costume Designers Guild Awards in Los Angeles on Thursday evening, Janelle Monae made quite an entrance with her eccentric attire.

39-year-old artist, newly appreciated by Taylor Swift, made a bold statement on the red carpet with an oversized, quirky plaid jacket featuring prominent, sharp shoulder pads.

Janelle, identifying as non-binary and preferring both she/her and they/them pronouns, adorned a peculiar jacket over a black button-down dress shirt, complete with a lavender bow tie.

They displayed their legs in a mini skirt featuring black and white plaid, adorned with front-fastened pastel blue buttons.

To finish off her stylish outfit, the creator of “Dirty Computer” donned black patent leather slip-ons accompanied by white socks.

Instead of carrying their necessities, they held their vital items in a compact designer bag before striking a pose for the cameras prior to the award function.

Janelle’s short blonde hair was gelled in place and they rocked a bright red lip.

According to their website, The Costume Designers Guild Awards recognize outstanding achievement in Costume Design across multiple categories such as films, TV shows, brief format designs, and costume sketching.

Nominees are chosen across nine distinct categories, such as Excellence in Historical Drama and Excellence in Science Fiction or Fantasy Television.

Films that received Oscar nominations such as “The Substance”, “Conclave”, “Wicked” and “Dune: Part Two” earned recognition in their respective categories when the nominees were announced in December.

At the awards ceremony in 2025, three-time Academy Award winner for costume design, Jenny Beavan, was honored with the Career Achievement Award.

She won an Academy Award in the Best Costume Design category for her work on the movies A Room with a View (1986), Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), and Cruella (2022).

This year, the Distinguished Service Award went to Salvador Perez, who served as President of the Costume Designers Guild. His designs were prominently displayed in The Mindy Project previously, and most recently, in the new Hocus Pocus film.

Sing Sing star Colman Domingo was also on hand to celebrate the CDGA winners on Thursday night.

The 55-year-old actor exuded his usual elegance in a sleek black jacket adorned with eye-catching gold embroidery on the collar and lapels.

Or, more casually:

The actor, aged 55, was looking sharp in a tailored black coat with some fancy golden stitching on the neck and shoulders.

Her completed the look with a thin black leather belt with gold hardware and skinny black slacks.

Domingo cozied up Nobody Wants This star Jackie Tohn during his red carpet stint.

Abbott Elementary star and creator Quinta Brunson wowed onlookers in a striking gold 3D floral.

The see-through frock had an elegant halter neckline and fringe skirt that hit the floor.

The 35-year-old actress wore a gently arranged, brunette pixie haircut and chose a makeup look emphasizing her natural beauty.

Kathryn Hahn donned a unique, all-white ensemble comprising a playful tweed jacket and a long pencil skirt ending at the ankles, giving her a striking appearance.

51-year-old star from Agatha All Along sauntered about wearing sharp sneaker heels and adorned with a casual necktie.

Daniel Selon, the nominee in the Best TV Contemporary Costumes category for his work on Disney+’s “Agatha All Along,” also joined her (She).

As a devoted admirer, I followed in the footsteps of the renowned filmmaker John Waters – famed for Hairspray (1988) and Cry Baby (1990) – as he donned a stylish gray jacket, a crisp white button-up shirt, and eye-catching maroon dress pants in LA.

Costume designer Maranda Nichols expressed her pro-choice views at a glamorous event by donning a fluffy coat adorned with the message “No Wire Hangers” written on its rear side.

Actress Connie Nielsen, famously known for her role in Gladiator, flaunted long, elegant legs in a sleek satin miniskirt, paired with a shimmering silver jacket.

The charming Danish actress, aged 59, seen more recently in the Gladiator follow-up film, was spotted carrying a cute handbag shaped like a pup while navigating the event venue in stylish high heels.

In the Best Film Costume Design category, Gladiator II was contending against fellow Oscar-nominees like Nosferatu, Angelina Jolie’s Maria, The Book of Clarence, and Saturday Night.

However, it was Linda Muir’s work in Nosferatu that ended up taking home the prize.
