Janel Grant’s team files motion to extend time for amended complaint in Vince McMahon suit
On Monday, Janel Grant’s legal team submitted a request for a hearing in Connecticut, known as a status conference. Their aim is to obtain a court schedule and also to be granted time to modify her lawsuit by incorporating the SEC Consent Order. In a recent development, Vince McMahon was instructed by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to pay a fine of $400,000, as well as reimburse WWE with an amount of $1.3 million.
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) announced that they have accused Vince McMahon, the ex-head of World Wrestling Entertainment Inc., of not disclosing two settlement agreements from 2019 and 2022 to the company’s Board of Directors, legal team, accountants, financial personnel, or auditor. By keeping this information hidden, McMahon bypassed WWE’s internal accounting control system, leading to significant errors in their 2018 and 2021 financial reports.
In 2022, during an investigation by the WWE board into McMahon’s activities, it was uncovered that he had paid approximately $12 million in settlements to various women. This revelation came on top of a previous $3 million settlement that had initially prompted the investigation. It is believed that these payments were connected to Grant.
Initially, Grant planned to modify her lawsuit by January 15th, but due to the SEC’s recent decision, she is asking for more time so her legal team can evaluate these new circumstances and include these newly emerging facts in the amended version of her complaint. This motion also verifies that Grant is among the non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) for which McMahon was penalized for improper reporting.
In conversation with B.J. Bethel of SEScoops, attorney Ann Callis stated that due to the Securities and Exchange Commission’s charges showing that Vince McMahon forced Ms. Grant into signing an NDA against the law, Ms. Grant has asked for a rescheduled hearing to incorporate these fresh findings in her lawsuit and set a definite timeline for her case progression. Ms. Grant is entitled to her day in court and seeks justice by bringing her abusers to account.
Vince McMahon’s files motion of opposition
McMahon’s legal team has submitted a motion asking the court to reject Grant’s petition for a status conference. Instead, they are proposing to shift the case to an arbitration hearing, which McMahon and Laurinaitis have been aiming for since the original lawsuit was filed.
Jessica Rosenberg, McMahon’s lawyer, issued a statement clarifying that the recent federal investigation led by SDNY did not result in any criminal charges. The settlement with the SEC regarding a minor accounting issue at WWE is unrelated to this case. Any suggestions made by Janel Grant’s team implying otherwise are merely a publicity tactic.
Kendra Barkoff-Lamy, a spokesperson for Grant, countered Rosenberg’s claim by saying that McMahon is attempting to block Janel Grant from getting a fair trial because he wants to conceal the shocking proof of his alleged repeated instances of sexual misconduct and trafficking from public view.
At present, McMahon is involved in a lawsuit with Linda McMahon, WWE, and TKO Holdings, alongside five ex-“Ring Boys”. These individuals claim that the McMahons knew about the sexual abuse they suffered as minors at the hands of Mel Phillips, a former WWF ring announcer who has since passed away. The case is temporarily postponed.
