Jane Fonda spent the evening with Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, just before they were fatally stabbed at their home in Brentwood on Sunday. The mansion was valued at $13.5 million.
The 88-year-old, two-time Oscar winner was likely talking about an incident at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party, where she and her husband reportedly had a heated argument with their son, Nick Reiner, who is a suspect in a case involving them.
Jane Fonda shared on Instagram Monday that Rob and Michele Reiner were incredibly kind, intelligent, and funny people who always sought ways to improve the world and spread kindness.
They were assisting me with starting a group dedicated to protecting free speech. I last saw them two nights ago, and they seemed perfectly well and cheerful. I’m devastated and in shock.
Although the climate activist and the famous filmmaker never collaborated, they both came from privileged backgrounds – their fathers were well-known Hollywood figures, Henry Fonda and Carl Reiner.

Reiner, 78, and his wife, 68, were killed. For years, they had sought help for their 32-year-old suspect’s mental health and drug abuse, issues that had led to more than 20 attempts at rehabilitation.
According to a source at the Christmas party, Nick was behaving erratically and making people uncomfortable by repeatedly asking if they were celebrities, according to People magazine.
The producer, who was nominated for an Oscar, has a child who is currently in jail in Los Angeles, accused of killing two people. The child is being held without the possibility of bail.
The couple, who had been married for 36 years, is remembered by their children, Jake Reiner, age 34, and Romy Reiner, age 27.
Rob Reiner was married to the late Penny Marshall from 1971 until their divorce in 1981. He is a grandfather to five children through her daughter, Tracy Reiner, who is 61 years old.
The director, originally from the Bronx, famously rewrote the ending of his beloved 1989 romantic comedy, When Harry Met Sally, to be more upbeat. He was inspired to do so after meeting Michele during the film’s production.
Reiner’s final film – Spinal Tap at Stonehenge: The Final Finale – hits theaters next year.
The mockumentary film features Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer, with special appearances by Eric Clapton, Josh Groban, and Shania Twain.

For the actor known for ‘The Bear,’ making the sequel to ‘This Is Spinal Tap’ – titled ‘Spinal Tap II: The End Continues’ – felt like a fitting return, as it continued the story from the original 1984 film.
Rob Reiner directed several beloved films, including Stand by Me (1986), The Princess Bride (1987), Misery (1990), and A Few Good Men (1992).
The Emmy-winning actor first became famous in 1971 playing the character Meathead on the CBS sitcom All in the Family.
