Jamie Foxx reveals he had a stroke in Netflix stand-up special: ‘I don’t remember 20 days’
As a cinephile with a keen eye for Hollywood’s behind-the-scenes drama, I can’t help but admire Jamie Foxx’s resilience and humor in the face of adversity. His new Netflix stand-up special, “What Had Happened Was,” is not just another laugh riot, but a testament to his indomitable spirit. It’s rare to see a celebrity share such intimate details about their health journey, especially in a way that makes us chuckle.
Jamie Foxx has decided to share all the details of his hospitalization from last year, using his preferred method of expression – humor.
Just yesterday, I unveiled my latest hilarious stand-up performance, and in the midst of the laughter, I shared a personal struggle. Back in April, I experienced something unexpected – a stroke. Previously, when this news surfaced, my loved ones issued a statement about an unspecified “medical issue” that they later chose to remove from public view. But now, I’m ready to share my journey with all of you.
As Foxx kept posting about his progress, he chose not to reveal all the details in March until he could tell the tale in a humorous manner, according to Variety’s report.
He made good on that promise with arrival of his Netflix stand-up special “What Had Happened Was.”
Entertainment & Arts
Over the weekend, Jamie Foxx reappeared on Twitter following his April hospitalization due to an unspecified health issue. On Sunday, he shared a message with his followers saying, “Keep well!
For about an hour onscreen, I delve into my life-altering health odyssey that began one fateful April night when what seemed like a regular headache took a turn for the worse.
He reminisced about asking his son for an aspirin, but soon discovered that in a critical medical situation, even boys may not be prepared with the necessary knowledge or skills.
He interrupted, snapping his fingers, “Just as I was reaching for the aspirin, something made me step outside instead. To be honest, I can’t recall the events of the past 20 days.
Using information from friends, family, and his own recollections, Foxx described the events that transpired shortly thereafter. The first physician who attended him gave a cortisone injection and recommended “less than ideal care,” he joked.
Instead of simply accepting his younger sister Deidra Dixon’s situation, I (the admirer) call her a mere four feet of unadulterated love. Yet, she was far from content. With an undeterred spirit, she embarked on a journey until she reached Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta – a place I hadn’t heard of before, but she sensed it harbored some divine beings within its walls.
The doctor reported that Foxx suffered a brain hemorrhage which resulted in a stroke, as the comedian himself stated. Throughout the entire operation, his sister fervently prayed.
“They put me back together again,” Foxx said. “Atlanta saved my life.”
On a May 2023 morning, Jamie Foxx, renowned for his role in “The Jamie Foxx Show,” awoke to find himself in a wheelchair. Surprised and determined, he declared his intention to try walking again. In a dramatic portrayal of this event in the special, Foxx’s legs quiver, his eyes filled with amazement. Eventually, he confessed that he had to concede defeat.
In the course of this extraordinary program, the actor from “Just Mercy” humorously addressed concerns expressed by my dear daughter, Corinne, about me potentially becoming a meme due to my health situation. He also shared a personal insight, mentioning that undergoing care from his nurse was a more unsettling experience than the stroke itself for him.
Foxx expressed to the audience in Atlanta, “I can’t express enough how wonderful this feels.” He added, “Should I dance throughout the night, please don’t worry about me. I’m simply overjoyed to be here and alive.
Movies
In my film enthusiast perspective, Maggie Betts’ next project following the undervalued masterpiece ‘Novitiate’ delivers a heartwarming courtroom saga that leaves no doubt about its intentions to captivate audiences. It’s packed with thought-provoking themes and ideas.
Initially in April 2023, Corinne Foxx shared that her father was receiving treatment due to a sudden health issue. After this initial statement, which has since been removed, there were questions surrounding the nature of his emergency situation. Later on, Corinne refuted such speculations, expressing disappointment about the sensationalism in media and confirming that her father had already spent several weeks recovering outside of the hospital.
In the spirit of transparency, I’ve always appreciated Jamie Foxx for, and it wasn’t until recently that he revealed the specifics behind his health scare in “What Had Happened Was.” Prior to Tuesday, he had shared publicly about a medical emergency without disclosing the details. Remarkably, he has been consistently open with us fans about his journey towards recovery and maintaining his wellness on social media.
Meanwhile, “Back in Action,” Foxx’s action movie with Cameron Diaz, releases in theaters Jan. 17.
The filming for the movie got postponed due to Jamie Foxx’s hospitalization in April 2023. However, in January, there were pictures published by Page Six that appeared to show the co-stars working on set, but it remains uncertain if Foxx had any remaining scenes to record at that time.
