James Whale’s Heart-Wrenching Birthday: Lucky to Make it to Christmas Amid Terminal Cancer Battle
On his 74th birthday, spent with loved ones over the weekend, James Whale acknowledged that he would consider himself remarkably fortunate if he were to reach Christmas.
The broadcaster is currently fighting a advanced stage of kidney cancer which has affected his spine, brain, and lungs. He had earlier mentioned that Christmas in the year 2023 might be his final celebration, following his decision to discontinue treatment.
Accompanied by co-host Lizzie Cundy and his spouse Nadine, James provided a health update as they all relaxed with beverages under the warm sunlight.
Although he feels alright, he made an honest admission that it seems simpler for him to experience a heart attack.
When Lizzie asked him how he was, he replied, “I’m alright for now. You know, I’m not planning on dying anytime soon, but who knows, right?
‘I have had all my treatment so I’m giving you the low down on it.’

James stated, “Should I reach Christmas, I’d consider myself incredibly fortunate. At times, it seems like it would be simpler to experience a heart attack and move on.
Last week, he shared a heart-wrenching health report, stating that he has reached the final stages in his cancer battle, with no further treatment options remaining.
On Monday, James, accompanied by his fellow host Ash Gould, disclosed that he would be reducing his on-air presence significantly, hinting that their show might be nearing its conclusion.
He said: ‘I’m at the end of my cancer journey. There is no treatment I can have anymore.’
He mentioned: “I want to express my deep gratitude for the opportunity Talk has given me to speak on-air and share a seat with Ash. It might seem like a hassle at times, but I’ve been doing this for 25 years!
James mentioned that his current poor health is the result of a particularly harsh case of the flu, causing him to require extensive care in intensive care.
Even though he was unwell, James found a way to make light of the situation: “There’s a chance it could benefit me; who knows? I try not to let that influence my thinking – still, with this medication, I can be quite erratic.
I plan to continue for a while longer, whether it’s a few more weeks or even months. However, if I ever find myself unable to perform any longer, I’ll stop immediately.

Over the holiday season, Celebrity Big Brother alum James found himself in an intensive care unit following an emergency trip to the hospital as he continues his fight against terminal cancer.
He was hospitalised with the flu and was later discharged from the ICU to recover at home.
Following a stressful week, I’m delighted to share that James Whale has successfully managed to evade the Grim Reaper once more and is now safely back at home after leaving the ICU.
‘This time he tried with a bout of Influenza A, but without success. Our hero is home for NYE.’
James received an MBE for services to broadcasting and charity back in April 2024.
