James Wan in early talks to develop Creature From the Black Lagoon movie for Universal

As a seasoned gamer and film enthusiast with a soft spot for horror genre, I can confidently say that the news of James Wan directing a remake of the 1954 classic, “Creature From the Black Lagoon,” has sent shivers of excitement down my spine. Having grown up watching the original, I remember the suspense and terror it instilled in me, and the thought of a modernized retelling under Wan’s direction is nothing short of intriguing.

Following the merger of my Atomic Monster production company with Blumhouse Productions earlier this year, it seems I’ve found my next directorial project: a reimagining of the 1954 monster horror classic, “Creature From the Black Lagoon.” Keep reading for updates on this exciting venture and my potential role in it.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but acknowledge James Wan’s remarkable contributions to the horror genre. Most famously, he brought to life the terrifyingly successful ‘The Conjuring’ Universe. Yet, his prowess extends beyond this, co-creating chilling masterpieces like the ‘Saw’ franchise and the ‘Insidious’ film series. However, since his directorial role in 2023’s ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’, he seems to have shifted more towards producing or executive producing roles in recent projects.

Currently, there are rumors circulating that he might be negotiating to direct a new version of “Creature From the Black Lagoon” for Atomic Monster and Universal Pictures. If these talks are successful, he plans to produce this film through his own production company, Atomic Monster, with Michael Clear and Judson Scott serving as executive producers.

Without revealing specific plot points, The Hollywood Reporter indicates that the upcoming remake will be a contemporary reimagining, blending realistic horror elements with reverence for the original film. Previously, director James Wan and his collaborators had proposed a remake concept to Universal, which has now been approved. Currently, they are searching for a writer to develop the script for this project.

In a 1954 film set in black-and-white, Jack Arnold took the director’s chair for a story penned by collaborative writers Harry Essex and Arthur Ross. The plot revolves around scientists venturing into the mysterious Black Lagoon, where they stumble upon a strange being – half-human, half-amphibian – known as the Gill-man. Their intention is to capture this prehistoric creature for scientific study, but their actions provoke the Gill-man’s hostility. Consequently, it retaliates by targeting and eliminating members of the research team one by one.

As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that this classic horror masterpiece, “Creature from the Black Lagoon,” boasts an impressive cast. Names like Richard Carlson, Julie Adams, Richard Denning, Antonio Moreno, Nestor Paiva, Whit Bissell, Ben Chapman, and Ricou Browning (not forgetting several others) grace its roster. The success of this groundbreaking film led to the birth of two sequels: “Revenge of the Creature” in 1955 and “The Creature Walks Among Us” in 1956.
