Following the unexpected passing of James Van Der Beek at age 48 on Wednesday, Zoë Saldaña offered support to his family.
According to screenshots shared on social media from a GoFundMe campaign, 47-year-old actor, known for his role in Avatar: Fire And Ash, has been donating $2,500 each month to support his family.
People were really touched and surprised by the actress’s kindness to the Van Der Beek family. A GoFundMe page revealed the family had run out of money while the actor was fighting colorectal cancer.
Saldaña and the actor from Varsity Blues haven’t worked together much on screen, and it’s not known if they were close friends.
The Daily Mail has reached out too Saldaña’s representatives for comment.
She shared a heartfelt post on her Instagram Stories Wednesday, expressing her sadness over the passing of Van Der Beek.
She expressed her sadness with a heartfelt message, writing ‘This hits hard… Our deepest condolences to his family,’ alongside a picture of the Dawson’s Creek actor.
On X, several accounts noted her apparent charity.
One X user praised Zoe Saldana’s generosity, saying it was incredibly heartwarming to learn she donates $2,500 every month to James Van Der Beek’s family after his recent loss.
They also provided a screenshot of the donation, which was made under the actress’s married name, Zoe Saldana–Perego.
People online praised Saldaña for supporting the Van Der Beek family, including his wife, Kimberly, and their six kids.
‘What an incredibly kind gesture from a wonderful young lady,’ one commenter wrote.
Someone else commented that receiving help monthly was wonderful and would be a huge comfort to a mother who is grieving.
‘Monthly support like that? Zoe Saldana is setting the standard for humanity,’ another user wrote.
Someone else commented that consistently paying each month really demonstrates her good nature.
As expected, some people criticized Saldaña’s donation. Some felt it wasn’t generous enough considering her wealth, while others doubted the fundraising campaign would run long enough for her monthly contributions to really help Van Der Beek’s family.
One commenter reacted to the news about Zoe Saldaña, saying, “With a net worth around $60 million, $2500 is something, I suppose.”
Someone else commented that she’s the highest-grossing actor ever, implying even that wasn’t a large enough accomplishment.
Someone else pointed out that there are likely families in greater need of assistance than the children of wealthy individuals.
But several commenters reacted defensively to the negative slant of some of the posts.
One grateful commenter praised the original post as a kind act and expressed hope that it would encourage others to do the same, noting that the comment section had unfortunately taken a different turn.
By early Thursday morning, the GoFundMe campaign for James Van Der Beek’s family had collected $1.16 million, nearing its $1.3 million target.
The initial goal was only $1 million, but it was raised after Van Der Beek’s supporters quickly surpassed it.
