James Van Der Beek strips off for The Real Full Monty to raise awareness for colorectal cancer as it’s revealed what happened behind the scenes of the emotional TV show
As I read through this heartwarming piece, my admiration for James Van Der Beek only grew stronger. His journey, filled with resilience and determination, is truly inspiring. It’s incredible to see how he continues to thrive, both personally and professionally, despite the challenges life has thrown his way.
For a new TV series titled “The Real Full Monty,” James Van Der Beek is choosing to disrobe, aiming to generate awareness about colorectal cancer.
Over the weekend, an actor from Dawson’s Creek, who is now 47 years old, shared on Instagram that he had received a diagnosis of colorectal cancer. In subsequent discussions with People magazine, he provided more details about his condition.
Now we know that James is going to be part of an ensemble of famous men on Fox’s The Real Full Monty, a two-hour program. In this show, the celebrities will remove their clothing to promote awareness for prostate, testicular, and colorectal cancer screenings and research.
The U.S. broadcast of the show is scheduled for December 9, featuring a preview clip that includes James along with actors Taye Diggs and Anthony Anderson, NFL player Chris Jones from the Kansas City Chiefs, Dancing With the Stars judge Bruno Tonioli, and musician Tyler Posey, who all appear in their underwear onstage before a live audience.
The program is modeled after a British series with the same title that has been airing since 2017. It will depict the journey of six performers as they prepare and practice for the most daring act of their careers, culminating in a grand strip-tease dance where they will expose themselves to a live audience.
As they approach the climax of undressing, the men will test their boundaries of comfort, decency, and camaraderie through a sequence of rehearsals and encounters, some private and others public. These activities are intended to boost their confidence, move them beyond their comfort zones, and fortify their unity as a team.
During the upcoming show, various celebrities will share their personal experiences with cancer, including how it has affected them. An inside source shared with TopMob that James was candid about his diagnosis and openly discussed it with his fellow contestants while filming, which occurred earlier this year.
According to the source, he’s deeply committed to assisting others through this program. His thoughts are often focused on others, and he aspires to create a meaningful impact.
It isn’t certain which phase of colorectal cancer James is experiencing, but on average, one out of every 23 men at age 65 develop this type of cancer that originates in either the colon or rectum, with about 65% living beyond five years after diagnosis.
Last week, James mentioned that he would be disclosing the news ‘at a time and manner of his choosing’, and extended his apologies to those whom he hadn’t had an opportunity to inform directly beforehand.
He hurriedly released a statement because he learned that a tabloid intended to publish the news ahead of time, and he hadn’t had the opportunity to inform some individuals yet. Admittedly, he didn’t prefer to disclose it publicly at that moment.
Every year, about 2 billion individuals worldwide learn they have been diagnosed with cancer, and I am unfortunately part of that group.
‘There’s no playbook for how announce these things, but I’d planned on talking about it at length with People magazine at some point soon… to raise awareness and tell my story on my own terms.
However, I needed to modify my plan this morning, as I received information that a tabloid would publish the news.
James went on to say: ‘I’ve handled this personally up until now, receiving care and paying more attention to my well-being than I ever have before.’
I’m doing well and have a strong sense of resilience. This journey has had its challenges, but I’ll share my experiences with you when I feel it’s appropriate.
I’m sorry to everyone in my life whom I intended to share my plans with. Unfortunately, this process hasn’t unfolded according to my desired schedule.
It isn’t certain when James received his initial diagnosis, but it hasn’t stopped him from being productive at work.
He most recently appeared in an episode of The CW’s Walker and he’ll next be seen in the Tubi film Sidelined: The QB and Me, debuting November 29.
Since 2021, those projects marked his return to work, as he lent his voice to Boris in the Disney animated series Vampirina.
After making his announcement, the actor from Dawson’s Creek received an outpouring of praise on social media platforms from fans who expressed their surprise, sorrow, and sympathy, while several also hoped that his openness about the condition would help increase understanding and awareness among the public.
James has a family of six with his spouse, Kimberly. Their children include a 14-year-old daughter named Olivia, a 12-year-old son called Joshua, another daughter Annabel who is ten, an eight-year-old daughter Emilia, a six-year-old daughter Gwendolyn, and their youngest child, three-year-old son Jeremiah.
