Summary
- Acclaimed light artist James Turrell will open The Return at Pace Gallery in Seoul, on view from June 14 through September 27.
- The exhibition will feature recent and never-before-seen light installations alongside a collection of photographs and works on paper.
Next month, Pace Gallery in Seoul will host an exhibition by James Turrell, marking his first appearance in Seoul since 17 years ago. Entitled “The Return“, this show presents five contemporary installations, one of which is a unique Wedgework piece never shown before. This renowned Light and Space artist has designed the tea house and all three gallery levels to create surreal illusions.
Similar to other installments in the series, Turrell’s newest creation titled Wedgework showcases a dance of color, darkness, and illumination. In a dimly lit space, light is given a tangible quality, with subtle shades forming an optical impression of depth and expanse. This work anchors itself in the realm of sensation, questioning traditional notions of materiality by manipulating “the essence of reality as perceived through the medium of light.
In addition to these pieces, you’ll find two big, curved glass panels, as well as round and diamond-patterned installations from the artist’s ongoing Glasswork series. These artworks give off a feeling of endless expanse thanks to their changing planes of light, inviting viewers into what appears to be infinite, radiant realms. To match the light-inspired works, there are also photographs and paper artworks that provide unique glimpses into the creative journey behind Turrell’s renowned Roden Crater project.
From June 14 until September 27, “The Return” will be featured as part of Pace Gallery’s programming for their 65th anniversary. In honor of this milestone, the gallery is presenting exhibitions by a talented selection of artists they’ve worked with over the years, across various locations worldwide.
