In conversation with Digital Spy, actor Norton (portraying Robert Edwards) discussed the unique difficulties of portraying a real-life character and the aspects he aimed to steer clear from.

Instead of beginning anew, it’s crucial to respect the memory of the deceased, especially in the case of Bob Edwards, as his loved ones remain closely involved.

It was clear to me that this movie would ideally resonate with his family, and it’s important to pay tribute to his memory by putting forth your best effort, finding the necessary motivation, and striving to avoid imitating him.

To truly understand a person’s core, complete your analysis during the day. Then, at the end of the day, set aside your work and simply enjoy the presence of the person you’re acting with. Constantly striving to mimic someone’s life could become counterproductive.

Bill Nighy, a fellow actor alongside Norton and the one portraying Patrick Steptoe, deliberately shied away from imitation in his performance. In fact, he made an effort to not watch any actual footage of Steptoe if possible.

He shared with Digital Spy, “I believe I inadvertently viewed a picture of Patrick Steptoe. To be honest, I didn’t want to see his image. When I mentioned this to the producer, she reassured me, saying ‘You’re perfect for the role.’ I replied, ‘Alright, I’ll go along with that.’

I don’t imitate Patrick Steptoe in any way, shape, or form, as far as his behavior, speech patterns, or other characteristics are concerned.

It proved more challenging for Thomasin McKenzie, given that there isn’t much public information available about Jean Purdy, despite her significant contributions to the development of In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF).

The concept behind Joy revolves around making sure Jean plays a pivotal role in the discovery. Given this fact, both McKenzie and Norton were cognizant of the significant duty that came with it.
