James Norton and Michael Sheen confirmed to lead “dark and brooding” adaptation

It’s been announced that James Norton and Michael Sheen will be part of the cast for the upcoming animated adaptation titled “Heart of Darkness“, which is based on an iconic tale.

Drawing inspiration from Joseph Conrad’s 1899 novel titled “Heart of Darkness“, the story centers around a noble sailor embarking on an expedition upstream in search of an enigmatic individual, believed to possess insights into a legendary realm shrouded in mystery.

Following a number of years in a holding pattern, Variety has shared news that Norton, Sheen, and Bill Nighy have already contributed their voices to this venture. The unique aspect of this production lies in its animated style, which employs sand as its medium.

As a gamer eagerly awaiting the next big release, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation for Gerald Conn’s forthcoming animated masterpiece. This game is set to be a deeply immersive journey into the complexities of human nature and colonialism, offering a dark and brooding perspective that promises to keep me on the edge of my seat. Moreover, it seems poised to deliver a biting critique of Western imperialism in Africa, challenging players to question their own biases and confront the harsh realities of history.

The role of Marlow, a sailor embarking on a demanding voyage, is to be voiced by Norton in this production, which is said to closely follow Conrad’s novella. Sheen takes on the mysterious character of Kurtz, the individual with power over a kingdom, while Nighy will depict The Manager.

In a statement, the director Conn expressed his delight about resuming work on the film, which has taken some time. He added that he’s thrilled to be collaborating with BreakThru Films, whom they’ve found to be an ideal creative partner.

BreakThru Films have gained significant recognition through their innovative feature films, notably “Loving Vincent” and “The Peasants.” These movies stand out due to a unique animation technique where oil paintings are animated using the process of rotoscoping.

Previously, Conrad’s novella was reimagined, with the most renowned adaptation being “Apocalypse Now.” Directed by Francis Ford Coppola in 1979, this film altered the backdrop to the Vietnam War, featuring Martin Sheen and Marlon Brando portraying characters inspired by Marlow and Kurtz.

Although the release date for “Heart of Darkness” is still undisclosed, it was recently announced that Norton has joined the cast for “Wavewalker: Breaking Free”, a four-part series adapting Suzanne Heywood’s 2023 memoir by the same name.

Heart of Darkness has yet to confirm a release date.
