So, me and my buddy, Jimmy Hands and Rudy Guscott – we messed up a bank robbery, big time. Now we’re stuck inside, and we’ve come up with this crazy plan: we’re putting on a musical to try and escape! It’s a long shot, but hey, what else are we gonna do?

However, the performance doesn’t go as planned, and unexpected problems cause a complete disaster.

The inmates face a critical moment, their freedom uncertain. Will their daring escape plan succeed, or will it fail?

Jimmy and Rud are played by Nesbitt and Lennie James, while Timothy Spall plays their fellow inmate, Cliff Gumbell. The film also features Bill Nighy, Christopher Plummer – known for his role in Knives Out, Celia Imrie, and Olivia Williams from The Sixth Sense.

Peter Cattaneo, the director and producer of The Full Monty, helmed this project. Stephen Fry, known for The Celebrity Traitors, wrote the lyrics for the musical numbers featured in the film.

Even with a strong cast, the movie Lucky Break hasn’t been well-received by critics, currently holding a 47% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 45 reviews. Opinions are divided, with Film Threat calling it “good, not great.”

The Washington Post described it as ‘just okay,’ while the New York Times found it to be strained, predictable, and overly patronizing.

Both Film Journal International and the Los Angeles Times praised the movie. Film Journal International called it a “wildly funny prison caper,” while the Los Angeles Times described it as “lightly reflective and consistently entertaining.”

According to Boxoffice Magazine, this film, similar to The Full Monty, is expected to uplift audiences and leave them feeling cheerful and humming the songs even after they leave the theater.
