James Morrison performs for the first time since the tragic death of his ex-partner as he prepares to tour again

Last week at the In It Together Festival, James Morrison made his first performance since the unfortunate passing of his former partner. This marks his return to the stage.

In January 2024, the 40-year-old singer was deeply saddened when his partner, Gill Catchpole, who he has two children with, was discovered deceased due to struggles with her mental health.

Despite parting ways in the year 2023, they remained cohabitants at their residence in Gloucestershire during that period.

In preparation for his September tour, James expressed his delight by stating that performing at the Wales music festival was a source of great pleasure for him.

In an update shared to Instagram on Monday, the musician uploaded a photo of himself on stage.

He expressed: “Performing at the In It Together Festival a few weeks back was absolutely delightful. I’m really looking forward to the tour in September.

In June 2024, an investigation concluded that James discovered his ex-partner had hung herself at home upon reading a warning message on the front door: “Stay out – contact the authorities.

Gill, in addition, penned goodbye letters to her two kids and former partner prior to ending her life.

It was reported to the Gloucester Coroner’s Court that the 45-year-old woman, who was a mother, had been battling mental health problems for quite some time and had once expressed thoughts about ending her life.

At the inquest, it was James who was absent, while Gill’s family, including her parents and sister, as well as several friends, were present. Emotions ran high in the courtroom as the details concerning her demise were recounted by the coroner, causing some of these friends to weep at the back of the room.

It was disclosed that a friend visited her house in Whitminster, Gloucestershire, on January 5 to pick her up for work.

My friend popped over to James’ place (they had separated a year ago but still lived together) to give him a heads-up.

According to coroner Roland Wooderson, Ms. Catchpole’s general practitioner had been managing her depression and anxiety since the year 2012.

James and Gill became engaged in 2006 and wore rings but they never married.

For the first time, they crossed paths when he was 17 years old, and she began renting a room in his mother’s house, accompanied by her partner. She later served as an inspiration for James, a renowned artist known for his heartfelt ballads.

James portrayed her as his “champion” and referred to their romance as a “small, enchanting love story.” The title of the album “You’re More Powerful Than You Realize” was drawn from her resilience following the early arrival of their daughter Ada.

As soon as she moved into my space, I found myself serenading her with every track from that beloved album. I filled our shared moments with melodies played gently on my acoustic guitar.

While I don’t label myself as a ‘romance enthusiast’, there are indeed aspects that I find romantic, such as our unique meeting story. It feels almost like a miniature fairy tale.

For James, her death was just another heartbreaking event in a life already marked by loss. Prior to releasing his greatest hits album in 2022, he had taken a break from the music scene following the passing of his alcoholic father Paul in 2010, and the deaths of his brother Alexis and nephew Callum within three years of each other.
