James McAvoy’s “charming and witty” British comedy Starter for 10 is on TV tonight.
On BBC One, the 2006 movie is scheduled to air at 10:01 PM this Saturday night, and following its television premiere, it can be streamed on iPlayer.
If the movie’s title led you to wonder, “Could this movie possibly be related to University Challenge?”, the answer would indeed be affirmative!
The storyline revolves around a character named Brian, who eventually secures a spot on his college’s challenging trivia squad for a renowned BBC program. He must deal with the stress of proving himself, a condescending team captain, and a complex romantic situation.
This ensemble is quite impressive, featuring the likes of James McAvoy alongside Dominic Cooper from “Mamma Mia!”, Gavin & Stacey’s James Corden, Catherine Tate known for “The Catherine Tate Show”, Rebecca Hall who starred in “Godzilla vs Kong”, Benedict Cumberbatch famous for “Doctor Strange”, Charles Dance of “Game of Thrones”, Lindsay Duncan from “Truelove”, Alice Eve from “Belgravia”, Ben Willbond from “Ghosts”, and Guy Henry who appeared on “Holby City”. Many other notable actors are also part of the cast.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie earned a 90% positive rating based on 80 critic reviews. In summary, the site’s consensus is that “Starter For 10” is an engaging and amusing coming-of-age story that maintains its charm and wit, even as it delves into more complex or somber themes. What sets this film apart from typical romantic comedies is its distinctive setting within a quiz show, making it particularly clever and witty.
More recently, McAvoy appeared in the psychological horror movie titled “Speak No Evil”, which is an English adaptation of a 2022 Danish film. Unlike its predecessor, this remake alters the original conclusion.
In a conversation with Digital Spy, the actor justified the transformation by saying: “I believe this is the sole conclusion our movie could take, and it’s the only option that fits our storyline.
While I’m not implying that the alternative ending or movie is flawed, it serves a different purpose. Both are excellent in their own ways.
