With a large cast in Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday, several actors who previously played X-Men characters for 20th Century Fox will have significant roles. James Marsden, a familiar face from the X-Men films, will return as Scott Summers/Cyclops after more than 20 years. This will be his fifth time playing the character (and his first major appearance since a cameo in 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past), and the trailer suggests this version of Cyclops will be the most faithful to the comic books yet.
For years, Michael Marsden didn’t say much about possibly returning to Marvel, even before the cast of Doomsday was revealed, but he was always willing to consider it. Now, he’s careful not to give away any secrets about the movie while also sharing how happy and excited he is to be back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With the release of this big crossover event getting closer, Marsden is trying to build up fan excitement by hinting at his return whenever he can.
James Marsden recently told MovieWeb how thrilled he is to be joining the cast of Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday. When asked about who he was most excited to work with, he said he was especially happy to reconnect with his former co-stars from the original X-Men films. He described it as like “stepping into a time machine,” going back over 25 years to be with the original cast again and reminisce about their time with Marvel, discussing how their characters have evolved over the years.
That’s a difficult question, as I’m not really supposed to discuss it much. But what meant the most to me was reconnecting with the cast and crew I worked with in the early 2000s. Being back on set with Patrick Stewart and everyone else felt like stepping into a time machine, back to when we originally filmed the show. There were a lot of hugs and a feeling of disbelief – like we were all wondering if it was really happening. It was also exciting to see these characters after twenty years, with new stories, updated technology, and the way all these different worlds were coming together. It was great to see everyone again, and to see them in a completely new context.

Hugh Jackman is excited to rejoin his former X-Men co-stars in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While he’ll be interacting with new MCU characters, he’s particularly happy to work again with Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), and Rebecca Romijn (Mystique), as well as Kelsey Grammer’s Beast and Alan Cummings’s Nightcrawler. Plus, fans will finally see Jackman in a comic-book accurate Cyclops costume – his trailer revealed the classic yellow and blue suit and red visor.
Although it’s still unclear what role the X-Men will play in the movie, James Marsden isn’t the only actor who’s had a good experience working on it. He’s had many chances during interviews for other projects to share details about joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, while also carefully avoiding spoilers. As fans eagerly await trailers and more information about Cyclops and the rest of the team, excitement is growing to see how Marvel will handle these classic heroes.
