James Gunn’s Wild 3-Minute Journey to Craft the MCU’s Infinity Stone Lore Revealed!
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is renowned for its smooth operation, providing a steady stream of fresh content in theaters and on Disney+. However, long-time fans may remember that during its initial phase, there was considerable innovation. For instance, James Gunn’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” was a significant gamble, and the filmmaker has shared that he developed the concept for the MCU’s Infinity Stones in just three minutes. Let’s delve into this further.
Prior to taking on the role of co-CEO for DCU, James Gunn had been striving to bring the Guardians of the Galaxy characters from comic books to live-action. The 2014 blockbuster provided additional details concerning the Infinity Stones; however, it was later disclosed that the explanations given by Benicio del Toro’s character, The Collector, were not well thought out. In an interview with GQ regarding his films, Gunn shared this information.
When I penned the part where The Collector described the origin of the explosive event resulting in the birth of the Infinity Stones, their significance, and their origins, it essentially took me only three minutes to compose that. And from there, the rest of the Infinity Stones’ narrative unfolded. There was no formal discussion other than a suggestion that the red and blue objects would eventually be identified as Infinity Stones. This revelation wasn’t initially part of the scheme.
Isn’t it amazing how that turned out? Although it was improvised, James Gunn penned the Infinity Stones sequence in Guardians of the Galaxy 1 at the last minute. Remarkably, those three minutes became official lore for the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. What perfect timing!

The streaming service, Disney+, is where you can find the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). They offer a new ad-supported plan at a monthly cost of $9.99. If you prefer an ad-free experience, it’s $15.99 per month or save 16% by pre-paying for a year at $159.99. Check out the deal here.
James Gunn’s insights in his interview with GQ offer a glimpse behind the scenes of the MCU’s early development. Despite appearing as an intricate master plan to fans, it was essentially ordinary folks piecing together each blockbuster movie. With his work on Guardians of the Galaxy, James Gunn paved the way for cosmic expansion within the MCU and laid the groundwork for the Infinity Stones, which played a crucial role in films such as Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.
In the very same interview, he disclosed an interesting detail about the first Guardians film – initially, the Power Stone was filmed as red, but it was altered to purple for the final version shown in cinemas. This modification occurred because they opted to make the Reality Stone, known as the Aether from Thor: The Dark World, red instead.

Following the conclusion of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”, fans find themselves pondering if and when this series will grace the big screen again. The title sequence hinted at Star-Lord’s return, but the fate of the rest of the team remains uncertain. Interestingly, none of the Guardians were mentioned in the cast list for “Avengers: Doomsday”.
