James Gunn’s Superman Changes the Story for Better or Worse

In the universe of DC Comics, James Gunn’s version of Superman brings about a notable transformation in two characters pivotal to the Man of Steel’s narrative. The previews and promotional materials for this movie have given us some fresh insights into Gunn’s DC Universe, even though much of the plotline remains shrouded in mystery. By carefully deciphering certain hints, a few aspects of Superman‘s story can be surmised from these trailers.

In the bustling cast of Superman, it’s simple to miss the innovative portrayals of classic characters, like Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Pruitt Taylor Vince as Jonathan Kent, and Neva Howell as Martha Kent. While these figures have been present in most live-action Superman adaptations to date, their significance within the storyline has not always been consistent. With James Gunn’s Superman and the broader DCU, it seems that the key figures close to Superman will continue to play a significant role in the franchise for a longer period than typical.

Ma & Pa Kent Will Likely Survive The Events Of James Gunn’s Superman

Jonathan And Martha Kent Seem To Be Present Late In Superman’s Plot

In awe, I recently caught a glimpse of the latest official trailer for James Gunn’s Superman. There’s a brief moment that struck me particularly, where it appears to be the Kent family farm, and they are attending to Superman’s wounds. Our hero lies unconscious on his bed, still donning the tattered costume from his reunion with the Justice League and the emotional scene with Lois Lane, amidst Guy Gardner’s battle against the enigmatic orb in the sky. This poignant scene suggesting Superman’s recovery at the Kents’ home might be set towards the end of the movie, potentially following Superman’s confrontation with the kaiju and perhaps even after his capture and encounters with the Hammer of Boravia and Ultraman.

The DCU Can Give Ma & Pa Kent Much More To Do Than Previous Movies

Jonathan And Martha Kent Can Go Way Beyond Superman’s Origin

In most adaptations, the characters Jonathan and Martha Kent, who significantly influence Clark Kent’s upbringing, tend to be portrayed as significant figures initially but later reduced to deceased mentors or secondary characters. For example, in Richard Donner’s Superman and Smallville, Pa Kent is killed off to instill in Clark Kent the idea that he can’t save everyone. The 1950s Adventures of Superman series introduces us to a Pa Kent who has already passed away before the series begins. Similarly, both Supergirl and Superman & Lois imply that Earth-38’s Jonathan and Martha Kent are no longer alive. In Man of Steel, instead of helping Clark when he needs it, Jonathan Kent chooses to protect his secret and ultimately perishes in a tornado.

The upcoming movie trailer by James Gunn for Superman hints that Ma and Pa Kent will not only survive throughout the film, but also play significant roles in the story. Instead of dying tragically or suddenly, they may offer guidance and support to Clark Kent, shaping him into Superman. Post the movie, it’s possible that Jonathan and Martha Kent would remain as key sources of inspiration for Superman, with their farm serving as his sanctuary.

Jonathan & Martha Kent Are Key To Superman’s Story

Ma & Pa Kent Are A Big Part Of The Reason Why Superman Is DC’s Biggest Hero

Through their care, the Kents adopt Superman as their son and instill in him human values such as humility, selflessness, and generosity. As a result of this upbringing by Jonathan and Martha Kent, Clark Kent is far more reminiscent of a Kansas-born boy than an alien superhero. Following his heroic battles, Clark discards his costume and cape, returning to his role as the cherished child of the Kents.

As an ardent fan, I’m thrilled about James Gunn’s upcoming take on Superman. Instead of just passing hope to Superman at their demise, the Kents – Jonathan and Martha – in this film could transcend the conventional “dead mentor” role. Their characters might reappear in future Superman sequels or other DC Universe projects, offering wisdom and a momentary respite amidst the relentless battles. This fresh approach could beautifully echo the central theme of Superman: hope.
