James Gunn’s DC Will Expand Into 4 Different Timelines (Confirmed)

Since James Gunn took charge of DC, everyone’s been talking about what changes he’ll make. The biggest questions are whether the world created by Matt Reeves’ *The Batman* will connect to Gunn’s new DC Universe, and which parts of the previous DC movies still count as official storylines.

James Gunn’s DC Studios is creating four different universes for its stories. Gunn became co-head of the studio in late 2022 and has already started a fresh beginning with the movie *Superman*, establishing a new DC Universe (DCU). In addition to this main universe, DC Studios is also developing other separate timelines for both live-action and animated projects, all under the leadership of Gunn and Peter Safran.

Despite James Gunn not completely dismissing the possibility, it’s become clear that Robert Pattinson and David Corenswet won’t be sharing the screen together. A more complex issue involves Gunn’s previous work with the old DC Universe on projects like *The Suicide Squad* and the first season of *Peacemaker*.

Season 2 of *Peacemaker* directly tackles established storylines, rewriting the Justice League as the Justice Gang after the events of Season 1. It also confirms events from *The Suicide Squad*, such as the death of Rick Flag Jr., as part of the official canon.

The most recent episode of *Peacemaker* hinted at a possible connection to David Ayer’s *Suicide Squad*, specifically bringing back Cara Delevingne’s character, Dr. June Moone, also known as the Enchantress, into the current storyline. This has sparked debate among fans about the show’s continuity.

DC Studios 4 Timelines Explained

New DCU Timeline

This is the most straightforward plan DC Studios has released so far. The new DC Universe will be the central story, and James Gunn will be focusing most of his efforts on it.

The new DC Universe started quietly with the animated series *Creature Commandos* in late 2024, but really gained attention when *Superman* premiered in theaters in July. The film’s success – earning over $100 million – led to the announcement of *Man of Tomorrow*, which will surprisingly feature a second main character.

The DC Universe has a lot planned! Season 2 of *Peacemaker* is currently being released, and next year we’ll see *Lanterns*. Plus, Milly Alcock is set to star in *Supergirl*, and there’s a horror project called *Clayface* that recently revealed a major plot twist.

Matt Reeves’ Batman Crime Saga

Although it’s still possible that the world of *The Batman* could connect to the main DC Universe, everything suggests it will remain a separate, alternate storyline.

Recent set photos from the upcoming Clayface project have convinced many fans that it takes place in a different timeline than both *The Batman* movie and Season 2 of *The Penguin*. The buildings and signs shown in the photos are noticeably different from those seen in those previous productions.

The sequel to *The Batman*, now with a completed script from Matt Reeves, is currently scheduled to come out on October 1, 2027. A second season of *The Penguin* series is also a possibility, though Peter Safran has noted that several factors still need to fall into place.

As a big fan, I’ve definitely noticed the long wait between the first and second movies. I even read a report suggesting this next film might not even *be* the next Batman movie we all expect – which is a little worrying, honestly!

‘My Adventures With’ Universe

The popular animated series *My Adventures with Superman* is getting a spin-off! Developer Jake Wyatt announced on X (formerly Twitter) that *My Adventures with Green Lantern* will continue the same universe and storytelling style.

Despite premiering in 2023 and quickly being renewed for a third season, the show *Superman* doesn’t have a release date yet. However, Jack Quaid has revealed that filming started over a year ago.

I’ve been waiting for news on my *Adventures with Green Lantern*, and it’s been pretty quiet since they first announced it. But I’m hoping releasing it soon after the new season of *Superman* will really help establish a cool, connected timeline for these animated movies.

Earth-2

James Gunn, on his Threads account, referred to ‘Earth-2’ as an alternate universe featured in Season 2 of *Peacemaker*. There’s speculation that this universe has a troubling past, potentially one where Hitler and the Nazis won World War II.

Things are looking up for John Cena’s character, Chris Smith. He’s found someone who’s interested in dating him, his brother is alive and thriving as a hero, and his father has even returned – both of them are now part of a superhero team, which feels like a dream come true.

The Quantum Unfolding Chamber, or QUC, is a key device in Peacemaker’s house. It opens doorways to 99 alternate realities, but this season, the focus has been primarily on one timeline in particular: Earth-2.

It’s still unknown how long the DC Universe will continue, but James Gunn has confirmed that Season 2 of *Peacemaker* will connect directly to the *Man of Tomorrow* film planned for 2027, meaning the idea of a multiverse will remain a part of the DCU for the time being.
