Although Batman isn’t yet fully integrated into James Gunn’s revamped DC Universe, there are definite signs that he’ll eventually join the cast. With Superman’s cinema debut, Gunn has signaled his intention to construct a vast cinematic universe reminiscent of the one he contributed to at Marvel. As the key figure in charge this time, he’s planning the development of one of history’s most iconic superheroes.

At present, Batman is one of only three original Justice League characters whose solo films are in active development. The Superman film starring David Corenswet has been doing well at the box office, and Gunn is just starting to work on a Wonder Woman movie, though there’s no word yet on when it will hit theaters. As for The Brave and the Bold, there’s no set release date as of now. Here’s what we know so far about Batman’s upcoming appearance in James Gunn’s reimagined DC Universe:

Batman Has Already Appeared In The DCU Once

Despite the anticipation among DC fans for a live-action Batman, the character has already made an appearance in the new franchise. In episode 6 of the animated “Creature Commandos,” we catch a glimpse of the Caped Crusader. He can be seen standing on a Gotham rooftop, peering down from a window, observing Doctor Phosphorus after his spectacular dance performance below.

In comparison to Robert Pattinson’s portrayal of Bruce Wayne in The Batman, this character seems to possess a much more substantial physique, reminiscent of Ben Affleck’s muscular Dark Knight from Zack Snyder’s DCEU. However, the details of the costume, apart from the white eyes visible through his mask, remain shrouded in mystery, with fans eagerly anticipating further revelations.

A Batman Solo Movie Is On The Way

James Gunn’s initial unveiling disclosed that Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters includes the development of “The Brave and the Bold”, which marks the DC Universe’s first standalone film featuring the Dark Knight. Distinct from Matt Reeves’ universe, this movie will acquaint DC fans with a broader Bat-family, predominantly focusing on Bruce Wayne and his son, Damian Wayne.

In this upcoming film, fans will get a fresh perspective on Batman within the DC Universe, with plans for him to eventually collaborate with David Corenswet’s Superman in forming the Justice League. Director James Gunn has clarified that the versions of Batman portrayed by Robert Pattinson and Ben Affleck will not be featured in this new movie.

Brave and the Bold Will Feature DCU’s Robin

Previously stated, the upcoming series titled “The Brave and the Bold” will offer viewers a fresh perspective on Damian Wayne as he takes on the role of DCU’s Robin. Gunn further elaborated that his portrayal of Robin is his preferred one, labeling him as a “spunky youngster,” an “assassin,” and even a “murderer.” Additionally, he hinted at a rather unusual “father-son dynamic” unfolding in this film.

In simple terms, this is going to be the initial live-action portrayal of Robin since Chris O’Donnell played him in the ’90s Batman films. Unlike the versions of Robin seen on “Titans” (played by Curran Walters as Jason Todd and Brendan Thwaites as Dick Grayson/Nightwing), this new Robin is expected to wear the Robin mantle.

Initially, Joseph Gordon-Levitt was contemplated for the role of Superman in the 2013 movie “Man of Steel,” but that plan didn’t materialize. This meant that his portrayal as the superhero on the big screen marked a fresh start, being the first attempt in over three decades.

Robin (And Batman) Might Appear In This DCU Project First

Before “The Brave and the Bold” marked DCU’s debut of live-action Batman, various characters from Batman folklore might already have appeared fully animated prior to this. In November 2024, during the Warner Bros. Pictures Animation presentation at the Lightbox Expo, the studio officially announced the release schedule for an animated film titled “Dynamic Duo,” stating it was slated to premiere in theaters in 2028.

In this upcoming film, we’ll delve into a tale focusing on Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, both of whom donned the Robin suit alongside Batman. However, they later adopted the identities Nightwing and Red Hood respectively. This movie will depict their earlier years, showing them teaming up as teenagers. It remains to be seen if they’ll cross paths with Batman in this storyline.

Robert Pattinson Will (Most Likely) NOT Be DCU’s Batman

Despite the upcoming “The Brave and the Bold” and future Batman productions planning to introduce a fresh face for the hero, there have been strong requests from fans for Robert Pattinson to continue portraying the character in the DC Universe. Given the acclaim Pattinson received for his performance in Matt Reeves’ 2022 film “The Batman”, discussions about merging this universe with the main DCU timeline have intensified.

Regarding that proposal, Gunn has affirmed that Matt Reeves will carry on his work in creating an Elseworlds tale. He is determined that, although the progress might be gradual, he and the DCU team plan to bring a new actor into the role of Bruce Wayne for the primary timeline. In essence, this implies that Gunn and Reeves are set to develop their own Batman narratives. Provided there are no unforeseen adjustments, Gunn’s film will be part of the DCU alongside David Corenswet’s Man of Steel and other Justice League members.

Additionally, Gunn clarified to Rolling Stone that he prefers a more serious and authentic Batman, distinguishing it from a humorous or exaggerated portrayal. He also emphasized that his version won’t be identical to Matt Reeves’ Batman, hinting at the differences between the two interpretations.

It’s crucial for Batman to have a purpose in his stories, not merely because he is a popular character owned by Warner Bros. While it’s true that he holds significant clout, the motivation behind creating a new Batman film should go beyond popularity. The DCU requires him, but this version of Batman won’t be identical to Matt Reeves’ Batman. Moreover, I have no interest in a humorous or campy portrayal of Batman. Instead, I’m focusing on ensuring that we can bring this concept to life. I believe I have a viable approach and am currently collaborating with the writer to make it happen.

These Actors Want To Play The Next Batman

Despite the leisurely pace of the selection process for the upcoming Batman, several prominent Hollywood actors have been tentatively linked to possibly assume the role. Some of these stars have even hinted at their desire to join the ranks of illustrious predecessors who have worn the cape and cowl. In response to speculation, Gunn has suggested that his Batman might be slightly older than Superman, or they could be around the same age (Corenswet recently turned 32 in July 2025).

Among the contenders is Winston Duke, famously known for playing Black Panther, who garnered many fans with his performances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as M’Baku. Expressing a desire to redefine the character’s storyline featuring a Black hero, the 38-year-old actor hinted at the possibility of transitioning to DC Comics if and when his obligations with Marvel come to an end.

Moving forward is Alan Ritchson, known for playing Jack Reacher, who boasts previous roles in the broader DC Universe through his stints as Aquaman on Smallville and Hawk on Titans. Expressing immense gratitude, the 42-year-old actor admits to being thrilled at the prospect of being cast in this role. He eagerly shares that he would be overjoyed to have the opportunity to portray the Caped Crusader.

One frequently favored cast choices among Batman fans includes Jensen Ackles, known for his roles in “The Boys” and “Supernatural.” Already lending his voice to Bruce Wayne in various DC animated films, Ackles expresses great fondness for this superhero as his all-time favorite. Should the opportunity arise, he has shown eagerness to explore the role.

Among those eagerly awaiting the opportunity is Jake Gyllenhaal from “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” who was once in the running for the role of the Caped Crusader under Christopher Nolan, only to see Christian Bale secure the part in the Dark Knight trilogy. Previously expressing feelings of intimidation due to the role’s rich history, he has also shared that it would be an immense honor to don the cape and cowl as the new Batman.
