James Gunn updates fans on Supergirl movie, starring House of the Dragon's Milly Alcock

As a gamer with a rich background of comic book-based video games under my belt, I must say, the news about Peter Safran and James Gunn taking charge at DC Studios has me both excited and hopeful. After years of lackluster performances from DC on the big screen, it’s refreshing to see a new team stepping up with fresh ideas and a clear vision for their universe.

In 2022, Peter Safran and director James Gunn were appointed as joint leaders of DC Studios, tasked with creating movies and TV series based on DC Comics. However, Warner Bros. Discovery has not achieved the level of success it desires in this field, with productions like “Justice League” falling short and “Blue Beetle” receiving minimal attention. Will they be able to change the course?

Under Safran and Gunn’s leadership, the first major film will be “Superman“, a fitting choice given that if you’re rebooting the DC Cinematic Universe, starting with its most iconic character (apart from Batman) seems logical. As stated by Gunn at New York Comic Con, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, “We are currently in the editing process.” David Corenswet, according to Gunn, is set to impress audiences greatly. He’s the type of actor that people have always hoped could exist. I believe many underestimate the breadth of his acting talent, both dramatically and comedically. He’s one of the best physical action stars I’ve ever collaborated with… A trailer isn’t far off, but we also don’t want to release it too soon.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’m super excited to share that I’ll be diving into a new adventure next July! This upcoming game will even include a special appearance from Milly Alcock, known for her remarkable role in ‘House of the Dragon’. She’ll be portraying Supergirl, and rumor has it she’ll star in her own movie later on. Ana [Nogueira] and Craig [Gillespie], who are leading this project as writer and director, are doing an outstanding job. We’re set to start filming in England come January!

Anna came in, and she pitched the story to me of Supergirl, and it was just one of the best pitches I’ve ever heard, and she immediately wrote it. She came in with the first draft that was great, and it’s just gotten better and better. Then Craig has been incredibly easy to work with, and I can’t wait for that to come out. It’s very much based on Tom King’s comic, Woman of Tomorrow. There are of course differences because it’s a three-act structure, so it’s a little bit different in the structure which goes through various stories but it has all those major characters, the major themes. Supergirl is a mess. It’s something I can’t wait for people to see. I think it is a completely different unique take on a superhero.

Gunn additionally noted that the film will introduce Ruthye, a character who serves as Supergirl’s companion seeking retribution for her slain father. In the comic “Woman of Tomorrow,” they traverse galaxies side by side. Interestingly, the Supergirl movie is titled “Supergirl: Girl of Tomorrow.

Although the identity of the actress playing Ruthye remains undisclosed, there’s certainly excitement for Milly Alcock to grace the silver screen again following her stellar portrayal as young Rhaenyra Targaryen in House of the Dragon. The film is set for release in 2026.

James Gunn gives updates on Lanterns, Peacemaker season 2, and more

Gunn provided information about numerous upcoming DC productions. His tenure will kick off with the release of the Superman movie, but the initial new DC offering will be a TV show titled “Creature Commandos.” This show resembles “Suicide Squad” in its premise, featuring an unusual team-up of misfit creatures. You can watch the trailer for this new animated series below:

The animated series “Creature Commandos” is set to debut on Max on December 5th. This show will intertwine with the broader DC Cinematic Universe that Gunn and Safran are constructing. For example, Rick Flag, a character from the show, is also featured in the live-action series “Peacemaker,” portrayed by Frank Grillo in both instances. James Gunn mentioned that he aimed to cast actors who could embody these characters in real life as well, and it appears he succeeded, given the notable names in the cast. David Harbour takes on the role of Frankenstein, Indira Varma plays the Bride, and Alan Tudyk portrays Dr. Phosphorus.

It’s clear that the upcoming project, Creature Commandos, will have a unique identity distinct from forthcoming productions like Superman or Peacemaker. As stated by Gunn, each DC Studios production will stand independently. He intends for Creature Commandos to be markedly different from the portrayal of Superman when it launches…Although they share a connected universe, we’re not aiming for an overarching aesthetic across all projects.

As long as we’re talking about DC stuff, let’s go over a few highlights from the panel:

  • Recently we learned that Rebel Ridge star Aaron Pierre will play Green Lantern John Stewart on the upcoming HBO show Lanterns, alongside Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan. “It’s a much more it’s a very grounded series, a very real series, which is a strange thing to say about a Green Lanterns show,” Gunn said. “But it’s going to be something like nobody’s ever seen before.”
  • Filming on the second season of Peacemaker is ongoing; Gunn shouted out director Greg Mottola for doing great work in season 1 and improving markedly in season 2.
  • Gunn emphasized that he doesn’t want the new DCU to be the kind of cinematic unvierse where you need to do a lot of homework. “This is first and foremost about story. We don’t want anybody to come to Creature Commandos going, ‘Oh, you have to watch the Suicide Squad to understand what happened in Creature Commandos,'” he said. “We want people to be able to come in this blind and then be totally excited about it.”

We’ll be watching as all this stuff rolls out.
