James Gunn Unveils DC’s First Original Supervillain Red St. Wild
James Gunn is gearing up to unveil the first original antagonist in his freshly conceived DC Universe. The DC Studios launched their new cinematic universe back in 2024 with the animated series titled “Creature Commandos,” and this year they’ll be expanding the storyline further through “Superman” and “Peacemaker” Season 2. Although the new DCU is rooted in the extensive library of characters and mythology from DC Comics, Gunn’s creative direction also encompasses the introduction of novel heroes and villains.
One of these characters is Michael Rooker’s character named Red St. Wild, who is set to debut in Peacemaker‘s second season. He will mark the introduction of the DCU’s first original supervillain. Previously, Rooker has had a minor role within the DC Universe, voicing Sam Fitzgibbon. However, he will take on a new role in the HBO Max series.
Entertainment Weekly reports that Michael Rooker’s enigmatic character in “Peacemaker” Season 2 serves as a sworn enemy, or antagonist, to the beloved character Eagly. Known as Red St. Wild, this character is renowned as the world’s top eagle hunter, and his objective within the series is to eliminate Eagly.
Red St. Wild, known as the world’s leading eagle hunter, is on a quest to eliminate Eagly, a character we believed was the fan favorite from season 1. In contrast to this beloved figure, Eagly now has his own tale in season 2, intertwined with that of his adversary, portrayed by none other than the detestable Michael Rooker.
In brief glimpses of Red St. Wild, viewers catch a glimpse of him carrying a comically oversized hunting rifle for eagles. In the trailer for Season 2 of Peacemaker, Rooker can be seen adorned in attire inspired by Native American cultures and appears to possess some enigmatic, possibly spiritual abilities that could prove useful in his quest to eradicate Eagly, implying a complex backstory or role in the series.
It’s confirmed that Red St. Wild will be the first new live-action supervillain for the DCU, who also has the potential to be superhuman. Fans can expect a closer look at him when Season 2 of Peacemaker debuts on HBO Max on August 21. Meanwhile, Gunn is expanding his roster of villainous characters in other DC projects as well.
Which Other Villains in the New DCU Are Original?
Ilana Rostovic
In Gunn’s initial venture for the DC Universe, titled Creature Commandos, we meet Ilana Rostovic (played by Maria Bakalova), the ruler of Pokolistan. At first glance, she appears compassionate and lovable; however, concealed beneath this facade lies a malicious streak with ambitions for global conquest.
As a devoted fan, I must say, the animated character introduced for Creature Commandos was remarkably unique and unexpectedly morphed into an adversary. This makes her another captivating original villain within the DC Universe. Unlike the Red St. Wild from Peacemaker, Rostovic isn’t a superpowered character but rather an animated one, which means she doesn’t possess the same level of supervillainy as the antagonist portrayed by Rooker in his series.
The Hammer of Boravia
In the trailers for James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie, we see a variety of adversaries that Superman will confront, among them a enigmatic character in golden armor referred to as the Hammer of Boravia. This character does not have a direct equivalent in DC comic books, suggesting that he could be an original creation. However, merchandise related to Superman seems to have inadvertently revealed that the person concealed beneath the Hammer of Boravia’s helmet is none other than Ultraman, a character from the DC Universe who wears a black mask and was seen escorting Superman into custody.
Ultraman is generally seen as Superman’s dark counterpart in DC comics. It’s uncertain how deeply Ultraman’s background will be incorporated into Gunn’s Superman movie. However, if the Hammer of Boravia twist is accurate, then the character could be viewed as a partially unique antagonist.
The Engineer
In the world of Superman, Maria Gabriela De Faría plays the role of an antagonist known as the Engineer. While this character has a counterpart in DC Comics, the portrayal in the new DC Universe offers enough differences from her comic book version to give the character a unique feel.
In the world of comic books, we find two characters classified as engineers. The original male engineer possesses the ability to modify his physical form through nanotechnology. Contrastingly, his female counterpart, Angela Spica, is engineered with a liquid machinery body that she can mold into various weapons. Interestingly, in the storyline of Superman, this engineer character seems to be a blend of both these concepts; he has a solid physical structure but can swiftly create an array of weapons on the spot.
The Engineer, apart from being an engineer, is also one of the original members of The Authority. This membership might allow for the introduction of additional antagonists within the DC Universe, including some new and unique ones.
