Okay, so DC Studios finally showed us what Hal Jordan’s Green Lantern suit will look like in the new Lanterns show, and honestly, people have really different opinions! It’s part of James Gunn’s big new DC Universe, but it feels way different than things like Superman or Peacemaker. It’s more of a hard-boiled, buddy-cop detective story, and it’s trying to be super realistic, which makes you wonder how they’re going to handle the superhero stuff – like, how will the suit and powers even work in a world that feels so down-to-earth?

The first look at a new Green Lantern suit has finally arrived in the trailer for the upcoming Lanterns series, answering a long-held question for fans. While HBO’s choice to keep the Green Lantern costumes hidden for so long was unusual for DC TV, this new reveal is leading many to wonder if the secrecy was ultimately worthwhile.

Though we only see part of it, the suit appears to be a faded brown and green chestpiece, reinforced with leather and a material similar to Kevlar. The Green Lantern Corps symbol is prominently displayed on the chest.

Unlike the recent Superman series, which featured a Green Lantern through Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner, the new Lanterns series is taking a different path with its hero designs. Instead of bright, comic-book-style costumes, Lanterns is opting for a more grounded and realistic look for its Green Lantern, toning down the traditionally vibrant suit designs.

Although the show’s realistic style works for Lanterns, it’s still part of the DC Universe, and the understated design of Hal Jordan’s Green Lantern suit has sparked debate among viewers.

SalMarra927 said they might like the costume better if they saw Kyle Chandler wearing it and moving around in it. However, they wondered why the Green Lantern suit wasn’t created directly from energy, originating from the power ring itself.

Interestingly, Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern wore a physical suit in an appearance with Superman, though it wasn’t the classic green – it was made by Lord Tech to match the Justice Gang’s uniforms.

Can Lanterns’ Green Lantern Suit Redeem Itself?

People online have already reacted to the new suit shown in Lanterns, but we still don’t have the full story behind the design.

The trailer doesn’t actually show Hal wearing the suit, so it’s unknown if this is his current one or a newer version inspired by the comics. As the more experienced Green Lantern, it’s fitting that his suit looks a bit older and worn. There’s probably a good reason within the story for why his suit differs from what fans might expect.

From the beginning, Lanterns hasn’t been marketed like a standard superhero series, even though it’s part of the DC Universe. The creators have often pointed to True Detective as inspiration, and that show is known for being realistic and dark.

While most superhero shows follow a familiar pattern, ‘Lanterns’ is trying something different, which could be a good thing and help it get noticed. The ‘Dark Knight’ movies successfully used a similar approach, but ‘Lanterns’ has a bigger challenge because the Green Lantern stories are set in a vast, sci-fi universe.

The marketing for Lanterns has been very subtle so far, intentionally revealing little about the powers, costumes, and rings of Hal and John Stewart.
