The storyline of James Gunn’s Chapter One in the DC Universe expands further following the successful summer blockbuster of Superman, and each new movie project from DC is generating considerable interest. One of the most buzzed-about titles is the upcoming Clayface movie, and recent set photos from the DCU have sparked speculation that Robert Pattinson’s Batman might be integrated into a larger DC Universe. In response, Gunn has now shared his thoughts on the matter.
A new image circulating online features a trash bin sporting a bat symbol, reminiscent of Robert Pattinson’s portrayal of Batman. Fans have speculated about this finding and its potential impact on the DC Universe’s Batman character. In response to a fan’s theory that this could mean a fusion of storylines, director James Gunn commented on social media, suggesting the “Battinson” sign might indeed signal such a merge.
Despite the trash can seemingly being part of the set I’m assigning, it’s difficult for me to accept that the bat was placed there by the art team without my knowledge. However, if that’s indeed the case, then the item must not have passed through my review process (I don’t have time to approve every single piece of set decoration).
The fan asked, “James, I’ve heard that the merger is taking place based on the sight of the Batman logo on the Clayface set. But isn’t it unusual for you to announce something as significant as this in such a way?
Indeed, it’s quite reasonable. Gunn provided a clear response that leaves little room for ambiguity. Moreover, considering his packed 2025 movie schedule – which includes the release of multiple films, writing Peacemaker Season 2, and starting work on the upcoming Superman spin-off titled Man of Tomorrow – it’s difficult to imagine he would have time to oversee minor details like a bat sticker on a dumpster. So, it’s likely that the bat icon isn’t an intentional clue from DC Studios in this context. Put simply, the dumpster is a genuine prop; the bat symbol probably doesn’t serve as a deliberate hint from the DC Studios.
As a movie enthusiast, I must say that the recent explanation by the visionary director behind “Super” doesn’t seem to quell the buzzing fan theories. The Dynamic Cinematic Universe (DCU) is currently abuzz with electricity, making each upcoming project feel like a tantalizing puzzle piece waiting to be fitted into the grand scheme.
The character Clayface, being fresh for this era and rumored to delve into body horror reminiscent of Matt Reeves’ Batman, presents plenty of room for conjecture. Perhaps a creative decorator added the bat symbol to the trash can as a humorous reference, or maybe it was the only available bat symbol. Regardless, Gunn seems to disapprove of people drawing such conclusions online.

If you’re unaware, Clayface is a project that was initially pitched by Mike Flanagan to DC. They were reportedly very enthusiastic about it, which led to the production of the movie. Initial reports described it as a grisly, R-rated body horror film within the DC Universe, and the set photos released so far have been quite intense. However, fans are curious about where this film fits in the DC timeline. Some speculate whether it’s an independent story or falls under the category of DC Elseworlds tales, similar to The Batman, its sequel, and Joker: Folie á Deux.
Regardless of how things unfold, the screenwriter of Slither has certainly shed some light on the situation. Although it won’t put an end to the speculation (since that’s impossible), it does help adjust our expectations. If and when the DCU chooses to link worlds with Pattinson’s Batman or introduces its own version of the Gotham Vigilante, it’s unlikely to be through a mystery label on a trash can. Instead, it will probably arrive via an official announcement, which aligns more with James Gunn’s approach.
As a devoted DC fan, I’m excitedly waiting for the upcoming theories to unfold. The next installment in our cherished universe is none other than “Supergirl,” set to hit the big screen on June 26, 2026. Following closely behind, we have “Clayface” scheduled for September 11 of the same year. Buckle up, DC fans! Our journey through these iconic stories continues.
