Fans already have a lot to anticipate from the DC Universe in 2026, and James Gunn recently shared some good news about season two of Creature Commandos. The 2024 series, created by Gunn and led by Dean Lorey (who also showran Harley Quinn), officially kicked off the DCU. It followed a new team of metahuman black ops agents—assembled by Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller and led by Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr.—as they were sent to a made-up country to prevent an attack by a sorceress from the Amazon, only to uncover a larger, hidden plot.
The first season of Creature Commandos, starring Indira Varma, Sean Gunn, Alan Tudyk, Zoë Chao, and David Harbour, was a success with both critics and viewers, leading to its renewal for a second season before the first season even ended. While Sean Gunn handled much of the writing for season one, Lorey will now lead a full writers’ room as they begin work on the show’s return.
James Gunn recently shared a positive update about season two of Creature Commandos while interacting with fans on Threads. He confirmed that the new season is currently being made, but explained the team won’t be back until the animation is finished. You can see his full response below.

Anyone familiar with how animated shows are made probably isn’t shocked to learn that season 2 of Creature Commandos is still being animated, even though production started way back in June 2025. The first season of the DCU show also took almost two years to complete, from the beginning of animation pre-production to its release on Max.
If production follows the same timeline as the first season, it’s probable that Creature Commandos season 2 won’t be released until Summer 2027. This approach aligns with James Gunn’s strategy of avoiding an overload of DCU content and maintaining high quality across all releases. It would also allow Gunn and the directors he’s collaborating with time to integrate the show’s stories and characters into future DC projects.
It will be fascinating to see how upcoming DC releases affect Creature Commandos season 2. We know John Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. is becoming increasingly opposed to metahumans and intends to use the alternate dimension of Salvation as their prison. Meanwhile, Clayface will appear in live-action for the first time in a film by Mike Flanagan. Plus, there’s talk that Wonder Woman might debut in James Gunn’s Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, which is scheduled to come out around the same time Creature Commandos returns – and we already saw a quick glimpse of her in promotional materials.
However, James Gunn seems to be aiming for a relatively self-contained story, so the first season of Creature Commandos might not have a huge impact on the overall DC Universe. While there could be small character developments hinting at future storylines, Gunn and Lorey might decide it’s more interesting creatively to keep the quirky Task Force M team separate for now.
