James Gunn Says Every Batman Fan Wants These Three Things on the DCU’s Next Dark Knight

Fans are eagerly awaiting the first live-action appearance of Batman in the new DC Universe. Discussions are still happening about exactly how the character should be depicted in this fresh continuity.

So, James Gunn actually talked about what fans really want to see in the new DCU Batman. It’s not about who Batman is as a person, but three specific things about his look or gear that people keep asking for. He mentioned this on Threads when someone asked him directly.

I’ve been following the DC chatter online, especially after James Gunn’s post, and it’s become super clear: fans really care about what Batman wears! Everyone seems to want him back in the classic blue and gray suit, with that iconic yellow oval around the bat symbol, and those striking white eyes. Honestly, this isn’t a new debate – people have been talking about this specific look for the Dark Knight for ages!

James Gunn revealed that we’ll see a specific design of Superman’s suit in the DCU by June 2025, while promoting the movie Superman. This suit has been a consistent part of the comic books for years, but it’s only been featured in live-action films twice before: once worn by Adam West in the 1960s and more recently by Ben Affleck in The Flash.

A strong discussion continues regarding Batman’s cape and cowl, which have long been part of his comic book and animated appearances. Some believe that while they effectively create a menacing look in those mediums, they might appear less believable and functional in a live-action movie, even though they were cleverly incorporated into The Dark Knight and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

The yellow oval on Batman’s chest hasn’t been seen since Val Kilmer wore it in the 1995 film Batman Forever. Recently, many animated versions of the hero have even replaced it with a simpler, black bat symbol.

I’ve been following James Gunn’s updates closely, and he’s really emphasized that while things like gadgets and specific plot points are important, they’re not his main focus right now. He’s way more concerned with getting Batman right – making sure the character feels authentic, has the right personality, and, crucially, that they find the perfect actor to bring him to life. It’s all about nailing the core of who Batman is for him.

What Is Already Known About The DCU Batman

We recently got a glimpse of the official DC Universe version of the Question in a flashback during an episode of Creature Commandos – he was shown arresting Dr. Phosphorous (played by Alan Tudyk). However, it was just a quick shot of his outline, so it’s still unknown if he’s wearing his classic blue and gray suit with the yellow oval on the chest.

The actor who will play Batman in this new film – a version separate from Robert Pattinson’s Batman – hasn’t been decided yet. Since director Andy Muschietti announced The Brave and the Bold, several actors have been considered, including the star of Reacher, who has expressed interest in a more complex character.

I’m really excited about the new Batman universe James Gunn is building! He hasn’t given away a ton about the story for The Dark Knight yet, but he seems pretty happy with where things are going for the character. I was listening to an interview he did with Tom Segura on the 2 Bears 1 Cave podcast, and he hinted that we might see a lot more up-close, physical fighting in the movie, which sounds awesome!

There is no release date for The Brave and the Bold.
