James Gunn Reveals Why Each DCU Movie Will Be Tonally Different

James Gunn, one of the co-CEOs at DC Studios, has reassured fans that each upcoming movie in their DC Universe will have its unique flavor, setting them apart from one another. This announcement is made prior to the much-anticipated American cinema debut of Superman, marking the beginning of the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters phase. After initial screenings and its release overseas, this film has garnered a Popcornmeter score of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes following positive reviews.

In a recent interview, Gunn hinted at what DC enthusiasts might anticipate in their forthcoming DCU ventures post-Superman. He hinted that the upcoming David Corenswet film won’t serve as the foundation for the franchise’s overall mood. Instead, he confirmed that each movie will have a distinctly different tone from one another, an approach inspired by the diversity within DC Comics.

I place great emphasis on ensuring each project carries its unique signature. Contrary to the R-rated movie and body horror film we’re working on featuring Clayface, this movie stands apart. It also differs from the Sgt. Rock movie we’re developing and Supergirl, a space fantasy. Craig Gillespie, who directed Supergirl, just passed by momentarily.

He went on to say, “One aspect I adore about DC Comics and graphic novels is that they gave individual artists and writers the freedom to develop their unique projects. Each one has a distinct voice, as evidenced by works like The Long Halloween, All-Star Superman, Dark Knight, Watchmen. Though these stories vary greatly in tone, they share the common bond of being set within the DC Comics universe. Now, we’re replicating this approach in the DCU.
