James Gunn Reveals the Shocking Inspiration Behind ‘Superman’ That Will Blow Your Mind!
The upcoming movie “Superman,” set to hit theaters globally on July 11, is highly anticipated as a potential blockbuster of the summer season. The film’s creator and director, James Gunn, drew inspiration from numerous comics, TV shows, and films for the DC Universe’s initial production. However, one unexpected influence on “Superman” might take you by surprise. While Gunn certainly delved into the rich archive of DC Comics and even past Superman movies like Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel,” he also found inspiration in creature features, such as Takashi Yamazaki’s “Godzilla Minus One.” Interestingly, Gunn didn’t focus on the monster aspect of the 2023 hit. Instead, it was the human characters that particularly intrigued James Gunn.
In the run-up to the launch of Superman, James Gunn recently chatted with Japanese media outlet Cinema Today to generate buzz. During this discussion, he discussed the impact Japanese cinema had on the movie, particularly Takashi Yamazaki’s 2023 blockbuster, Godzilla Minus One. He mentioned that he aimed to combine aspects like giant monsters, robots, flying dogs, other superheroes… In addition, Gunn shared how the Ultraman films significantly shaped his career, influencing not only Superman, but also his overall work.
Subsequently, the director shifted his focus towards “Godzilla Minus One”, a movie that premiered in 2023. This film is highly acclaimed as one of the best kaiju productions, alongside “Shin Godzilla”. The director expressed his intention to create a movie that portrays Godzilla similarly to “Godzilla Minus One”, but also includes compelling human drama. He further elaborated that the film doesn’t resemble a typical Western “Godzilla” production. In this movie, human characters take center stage, and their personal narratives are interwoven with the giant, irradiated lizard causing destruction in Japan. Gunn added:
In this movie, you’ll find not only Superman and his canine counterpart Krypto, but it primarily focuses on a human narrative. The intricate dynamic between Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Lex Luthor forms the heart of the storyline.
‘Superman’ Can Usher In a New Age of DC Movies
As a dedicated cinema enthusiast, I must admit that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been dominating the superhero genre on the silver screen for nearly a decade now. Meanwhile, the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), which started with “Man of Steel,” was scrambling to keep up. They gave the green light to numerous movies (most of them never saw the light of day) and hastily tried to assemble DC’s equivalent of The Avengers, The Justice League, for their grand team-up on the big screen.
2023 saw James Gunn and Peter Safran take on the roles of co-presidents at DC Studios, aiming to breathe new life into the ailing DCEU. The upcoming “Superman” film is slated as the initial release, serving as a guidepost for the future direction of the franchise. Fans are eagerly anticipating that “Superman” will be a hit, based on early screenings, ensuring the revamped DC Universe has a lasting impact. However, fans also hope that DC Studios avoids repeating Warner Bros.’ past errors with the DCEU.
