James Gunn "reveals" new actress for Wonder Woman in DC Universe

As a lifelong fan of the indomitable Amazonian warrior, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia as we bid farewell to Gal Gadot’s iconic portrayal of Wonder Woman. However, the prospect of a new Diana Prince gracing our screens is both exhilarating and daunting, much like the first time I tried to lift a weight that was too heavy for me at the gym – intimidating but also filled with potential for growth.

One of the most remarkable superheroes to grace our planet is none other than Wonder Woman. Born on the mystical island of Themyscira, also known as Paradise Island, she has dedicated her life to defending people’s rights and promoting love over hostility. Ever since her debut in DC Comics back in 1941, she has been a beacon of hope worldwide.

Over time, we’ve witnessed various incarnations of this character in live-action, with Lynda Carter’s portrayal in the 1975 Wonder Woman TV show and Gal Gadot’s role in the DC Extended Universe films standing out. Initially, it was assumed that Gadot would carry on as the hero for quite some time, given the nascent stage of the DCEU. However, her future as Wonder Woman became uncertain when DC Studios took charge and postponed Wonder Woman 3.

It looks like James Gunn, co-chairman and CEO of DC Studios, has hinted on social media that the role of the Amazonian warrior will be given to a new actress in the upcoming DC Universe series.

James Gunn comments on Wonder Woman’s DCU future

It’s no secret that James Gunn is particularly active on social media platform Threads as he often shares tidbits and teasers with fans as to what they can expect from the upcoming launch of the DC Universe. In a recent post, however, he acknowledged the potential of casting Wonder Woman in the franchise in the future, responding to a fan inquiry about what he thought about the suggestion that Wonder Woman should be taller than Superman, commenting:

Not good. I don’t know where I’d find an accomplished and talented actress 6’5′ or over.

This statement doesn’t provide additional information about who will play Wonder Woman when she reappears in the DC Universe, but it does seem to indicate that a recast is imminent. This follows a previous post where Gunn clarified that Wonder Woman hadn’t been cast in the franchise so far. Previously, Gal Gadot fans had speculated that this could mean a possible return, but now it seems clear that she won’t be returning to the role.

Gal Gadot played the character in the DCEU, first appearing in the 2016 film “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” followed by the highly praised “Wonder Woman” in 2017. She reprised her role for the controversial “Justice League” (and its acclaimed Snyder Cut), “Wonder Woman 1984,” and had a brief appearance in “The Flash.” Before the Warner Bros. Discovery merger, plans were underway for a third Wonder Woman movie, paving the way for DC Studios’ creation.

It’s not completely unexpected that the character may be recast, as Variety has shared that none of the actors from Zack Snyder’s previous DC films will reprise their roles in the new DC Universe. However, fans who have followed the Wonder Woman film series were hoping there might be a possibility for Gadot to return, given how this franchise was the one area where the DCEU seemed to get it right.

Prior to recent speculation, Gadot had previously mentioned to Entertainment Tonight that “things were being quietly handled” when asked about her potential return as Diana Prince. This comment fueled fan optimism. However, after the cancellation of Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 3 due to creative differences with James Gunn and Peter Safran, there were discussions about Gadot reprising her role in a distinct third Wonder Woman film. Yet, no developments on this potential project have been announced since then.

James Gunn has been transparent about the DC Studios projects underway, detailing their different stages of progress. However, the topic of Wonder Woman has been noticeably absent from these discussions. While we have a new Superman in David Corenswet (set to debut in Gunn’s upcoming Superman film next year), and a new Batman is expected in The Brave and the Bold, there are currently no announced Wonder Woman projects, suggesting that fans may not hear about the new Diana Prince cast member for some time.

Nevertheless, it has been confirmed that a fresh actress will take on the role of Wonder Woman within the DC Universe. This, unsurprisingly, may spark disagreements among fans.
