Fans are getting their first glimpse of the new DC Universe! James Gunn, the writer and director of the upcoming Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, has shared a photo revealing Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The image shows Luthor in a comic-book-inspired, armored suit – marking the first time the iconic green and purple battlesuit has appeared in a live-action movie.
In a departure from typical storylines where Lex Luthor works behind the scenes, the upcoming film Man of Tomorrow puts him directly into the action. Director James Gunn has stated the movie will focus on Lex Luthor just as much as Superman. The story will center around an unlikely and tense partnership between Superman, played by David Corenswet, and Luthor as they team up to combat a massive, intergalactic danger: the alien robot Brainiac, portrayed by Lars Eidinger.
Lex Luthor needs incredible power to fight gods and alien invaders, and that’s where his warsuit comes in. First appearing in a 1983 comic book, this powerful armor gives Luthor the strength, ability to fly, and energy weapons he needs to go head-to-head with even the strongest opponents. Though we’ve seen smaller versions of the suit on shows like Supergirl and Superman & Lois, the version we’ll see in the new movie is the first time fans will get to see the full, impressive design brought to life with a big-budget visual effects team.
As the DC Universe grows with new shows like Supergirl and Lanterns, Man of Tomorrow is becoming a major, action-packed film that will launch the first chapter of the new universe, titled ‘Gods and Monsters.’ The movie will feature an unlikely alliance between Superman and Lex Luthor, and it’s set to release in theaters globally on July 9, 2027.
