Choosing a movie title takes a lot of consideration, and James Gunn has explained his approach at DC Studios. As he prepares to direct his second superhero film – a Superman sequel called Man of Tomorrow – some fans have questioned the title. Unlike the previous film, it doesn’t include ‘Superman’ in the name. However, Gunn suggests this choice is intentional and part of a larger plan for the DC Universe.
James Gunn recently explained the reasoning behind DC Studios’ movie titles in a response to a fan on Threads. When asked if the next Superman film might be titled Superman: Man of Tomorrow, Gunn said he generally avoids using colons in the titles.
“I try to avoid the colons. No double-entendres intended.”
James Gunn recently clarified that a rumored title change isn’t happening. Although it wasn’t officially announced before, this strategy of simplifying titles has happened with several DC Universe projects. For example, the first film in the DCU, Superman, was initially called Superman: Legacy but released without the subtitle. Similarly, the upcoming Supergirl movie was once known as Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow before the title was shortened.
I’ve noticed something really interesting about the new DC Universe – so far, none of their titles have included a colon! It seems like this is a deliberate choice by James Gunn and his team, and I’m curious to see if it’s part of a bigger plan for the overall brand.
The DC Universe is back in theaters on June 26 with the new Supergirl movie. Following that, fans can look forward to more exciting releases, including the Lanterns series on HBO later this summer, and Clayface, a darker, more mature comic book adaptation, arriving October 23.
Gunn’s Title Strategy Is More Innovative Than You Think
James Gunn doesn’t like using colons in movie titles, which is quite different from what most studios do today, particularly Marvel – DC’s main rival. Unlike the past, sequels no longer just add a number to the original title.
Now, studios seem much more inclined to go the colon route, as if to hide that a movie is a sequel at all. Just look at Marvel Studios. The MCU has turned away from titles like Iron Man 2 and 3, opting instead for colon-forward names like Avengers: Doomsday and Captain America: Brave New World.
While James Gunn’s follow-up to Superman isn’t titled Superman 2 – it’s called Man of Tomorrow – it represents a very different approach compared to what other studios are doing.
Interestingly, James Gunn’s approach for the DC Universe seems inspired by the source material – DC’s comic books. He’s clearly leaning into comic book titles for his DC Studios projects, like Man of Tomorrow and The Brave and the Bold. While Marvel Studios has also drawn inspiration from comics for years, they generally include the main hero’s name in the title.
It’s still early days for the DCU, and things could definitely shift as we get more movies, but right now, it looks like James Gunn is really doing his own thing and building something unique. As a fan, it’s exciting to see him take the lead and put his own stamp on this universe.
