James Gunn has stated that the new animated series, Mister Miracle, will be officially part of the DC Universe (DCU). The series was announced by HBO in June 2025, just before the Superman movie is scheduled to come out. Fans were curious whether this animated show would connect to the wider DCU, similar to Creature Commandos, or exist on its own, like the upcoming My Adventures with Green Lantern.
James Gunn has officially confirmed that Mister Miracle is part of the new DC Universe (DCU) canon. In an Instagram post celebrating the character’s 55th anniversary, Gunn announced that Mister Miracle will appear in a future DCU animated series. He later verified the statement’s accuracy when a fan asked for confirmation about the animated series being connected to the main DCU storyline, simply replying, “Indeed.”
How ‘Mister Miracle’ Being Canon Impacts the DCU’s Future
Mister Miracle, created by Jack Kirby, first appeared in his own comic book in 1971. The character, Scott Free, escaped a difficult life on the planet Apokolips – where he was raised by the villain Darkseid – and became a world-class escape artist after coming to Earth. He’s chased by, and eventually falls in love with, Big Barda, a powerful warrior from Apokolips who leaves Darkseid’s side for him. A highly praised twelve-issue series by Tom King and Mitch Gerads was released between 2016 and 2017, winning an Eisner Award in 2019. Now, Tom King will lead a new project as showrunner, with Mitch Gerads contributing to the animation.
As a huge DC fan, I’m thrilled to hear that Mister Miracle is officially part of the new DC Universe! It’s joining an already awesome lineup of projects, including Supergirl, Lanterns, Clayface, Man of Tomorrow, Creature Commandos Season 2, Booster Gold, The Brave and the Bold, and the new Wonder Woman movie. It’s such a varied mix, really showing how expansive the DCU can be. While we don’t have a release date for Mister Miracle yet, production is happening now, and I’m hearing they’ve already started casting. Just like with Creature Commandos, it sounds like the actors they find for Mister Miracle will also be playing those same characters when the show hits live-action, which is really cool!

The inclusion of Mister Miracle in the DC Universe confirms that Darkseid will appear, despite James Gunn previously suggesting he wouldn’t be the main villain after being featured in Zack Snyder’s films. Darkseid is central to the Mister Miracle comics and the larger New Gods mythology. While a storyline Gunn hinted at in Peacemaker does connect to Darkseid in the comics, he’s currently not planning that connection. It will be fascinating to see how the DCU reimagines Darkseid, shifting him from a universe-level threat to a more focused enemy for Mister Miracle, potentially saving him as a larger villain for future stories if needed.
