James Gunn Reveals 2 New Batman Scripts in the Works—Big DCU Changes Ahead?

James Gunn recently hinted at exciting news about the upcoming Batman film in the DC Universe, although the spotlight is currently on his new Superman project. Soon enough, fans will start wondering again about the progress of DC Studios’ interpretation of the Batman character. The Batman-centric projects are scheduled to materialize as “The Brave and the Bold,” a fresh take on the Dark Knight inspired by Grant Morrison’s work on the Batman comics.

In a recent interview, James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, suggested that the Batman movie within the DC Universe could reach a significant milestone soon. Gunn mentioned that the DCU’s Batman project has been challenging to crack for a while, and there have been whispers that the film directed by Andy Muschietti has faced bumps in its development process.

In a conversation with Omelete in Brazil, Gunn was directly asked, “How many Batman scripts do you think you’ll be reading over the next few months?” The Superman movie creator replied, “I expect to read two of them.

Hey James, let’s get back to you. Can you give us an idea of how many Batman scripts you think we might be reading over the next couple of months?

A: “Two.”

It’s plausible that one of these scripts could be the final draft for “The Batman 2,” written by Matt Reeves, which is expected to follow an Elseworlds sequel narrative within his unique interpretation of the Batman universe. The identity of the other script, however, still remains unclear.

Among the various Batman-related productions floating around at DC Studios, only one can truly be recognized as a Batman story. This could suggest that the other enigmatic script is the long-awaited “Brave and the Bold,” possibly indicating that the DCU Batman film is moving closer to its ultimate launch.

One of James Gunn’s early project titles, “The Brave and the Bold,” has seen less updates since its announcement. Recent reports suggest that the upcoming Batman film will center around an older Dark Knight, embarking on adventures with his son, Damian Wayne – known as the fifth Robin in DC Comics.

The movie titled “Brave and the Bold” doesn’t have any publicly disclosed release dates or cast members yet, but it does have a director lined up – Andy Muschietti, who is known for directing “The Flash” film, will be at the helm of this project.

What Is Next For the DCU’s Batman?

Over the past several months, there have been numerous speculations about the DCU Batman film. These included rumors of possible cast choices, speculation about director Andy Muschietti possibly facing difficulties with the project, and suggestions that Matt Reeves’ The Batman 2 might completely take over instead.

Currently, if Gunn’s recent comment about a new Batman script for The Brave and the Bold suggests, it appears that the movie project might be moving forward.

After this summer’s Superman film, it seems that Supergirl will be the next blockbuster DCU movie to grace our cinemas. Interestingly, there’s no major superhero flick from the DC Universe on the horizon, with the closest being Matt Reeves’ The Batman 2, which is scheduled for October 2027.

This implies that Gunn might be intending to move forward with “The Brave and the Bold” as his next project, given that a script is nearly completed. However, there’s also a chance he could have been referring to something else entirely.

In discussions about the upcoming movie “Superman,” the co-CEO of DC Studios has mentioned their vision for the character often, suggesting that the Dark Knight (Caped Crusader) is currently a significant focus of his thoughts.

One remark that sparked interest was Gunn stating he’s working on a follow-up for David Corenswet’s Man of Steel, although it may not specifically be known as Superman 2.

Others interpret this as suggesting that Gunn might be developing a movie titled “World’s Finest,” where Superman and Batman would join forces, laying the groundwork for what eventually evolves into the Justice League within the DC Universe.

It’s possible that’s the script he’s talking about. He could be in the process of writing a “World’s Finest” script, hinting at Batman’s involvement, and aiming to complete it within the following two months.
