James Gunn‘s new DC Universe is still getting established, but he and his team are definitely putting in a lot of effort. DC Studios is taking bold chances with projects like a solo movie for Clayface and a TV show about Jimmy Olsen. However, their riskiest move so far might be changing the title of the next Superman movie.
There was a rumor going around that the movie Man of Tomorrow was being retitled Superman: Man of Tomorrow, but director James Gunn has confirmed that’s not true. He posted on social media that the title hasn’t changed, and he actually prefers movie titles without colons.
It’s unusual to avoid using periods at the end of announcements when you’re working with superheroes. Most big franchises use them to hint at upcoming adaptations of famous comic book stories or to announce important news. However, James Gunn recognizes that jumping the gun can be risky, and just because others do it doesn’t mean it’s a good idea.
DC Has a History of Doing Too Much With Its Titles

The recent discussion about the title Man of Tomorrow isn’t the first time James Gunn has had to address concerns about colons in his DC Universe plans. When he first announced the initial slate of projects, Superman: Legacy and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow particularly stood out. Gunn ultimately simplified the titles of these Superman and Supergirl movies. While he offered reasonable explanations for the changes then, it’s likely that the earlier feedback influenced his decision.
For decades, DC Comics has brought its characters to life in movies, giving both heroes and villains their time to shine. While films like Aquaman and Joker have found success, Superman and Batman remain the most popular and recognizable figures from the DC universe.
Every few years, Batman and Superman team up for a new movie poster. They famously shared the screen in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The film was initially advertised as a full-blown battle between the two heroes, but the tagline after the title hinted at a different story, and ultimately led to problems with the movie’s direction.
The best parts of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice were the conflicts between Batman and Superman as they tried to impose their different ideas of justice. However, the movie became overly complicated with the introduction of Wonder Woman, the villain Doomsday, and too many brief appearances from future Justice League characters. Ultimately, Dawn of Justice tried to do too much, and it set the DC Extended Universe on a downward trajectory it couldn’t recover from.
I’m really impressed with how carefully the DCU is building things. They’re not overpromising, which is great – they’re only hinting at what they’re confident they can actually achieve. I have a feeling Man of Tomorrow will lay the groundwork for exciting things to come, but it’s reassuring to know they won’t rush and mess up the overall story just to build a huge world right away. It feels very deliberate and well-planned, and that gives me a lot of hope for what’s next!
