James Gunn is open to R-rated movies in his DC Universe

As a fan who’s been through the rollercoaster ride that is superhero storytelling, I can’t help but be thrilled by the prospect of more mature, R-rated projects gracing our screens under the DC Universe banner. James Gunn has always shown a knack for infusing dark humor and gritty realism into his works, making him an ideal choice to lead this new era.

Modern movies and series such as Deadpool, The Boys, Invincible, and Peacemaker have gained significant popularity, indicating a shift towards more mature themes within the superhero genre. This newfound preference for adult-oriented storytelling has grown significantly in recent times, and it’s no wonder that the newly appointed DC chief, James Gunn, is keen on exploring R-rated projects in his revamped DC Universe. Given his past work with The Suicide Squad, an R-rated superhero film, this seems like a natural progression for him.

Next year, James Gunn and Peter Safran’s revamped DC Universe will debut with a new take on Superman, featuring David Corenswet as the freshly minted Man of Steel. This film, helmed by Gunn, draws inspiration from popular comics like “Superman for All Seasons” and “All-Star Superman.” Initially sticking to a family-friendly approach, Gunn is open to incorporating adult-oriented content as the story progresses, provided it aligns with the narrative he wants to convey.

In a conversation with Collider, Gunn clarified that it’s not about experimenting to see if something functions, but rather about narrating a tale. If the narrative calls for an R-rating, they are comfortable with that. If it leans more towards PG, PG-13, or even a G rating, it makes no difference to them – whatever serves the story best is what they’ll go with.

He won’t experiment by releasing R-rated films first to gauge their success, then produce more. Instead, if a narrative suits that rating and could gain from it, Gunn is comfortable proceeding with adult content themes. The key lies in choosing the appropriate instances for such material.

“We’re not about that. We’re not about ‘See how it does.’ We’ve got one opportunity to take these characters and really press forward and do what we believe. I am a great believer that if we tell good, authentic stories, if a movie does well or doesn’t do as well, if you keep with that same philosophy, that you’re going to build a universe that people are going to love and want to be a part of for a long time.”

To sum up, Gunn hinted that there might be multiple potential R-rated productions nearing approval from DC Studios. For now, the franchise launches with the animated series “Creature Commandos,” set to debut on Max on December 5.

Daniel Craig linked with DC move!

Regarding the future DC Universe, it’s been reported that famous actor Daniel Craig, known for his role as James Bond, could be joining the team. There are whispers that he might take on the lead role in the DC Studios film “Sgt. Rock,” a story about a tough World War II soldier. The project, directed by Luca Guadagnino, is still in its early phases of development and no official decisions have been made yet.

With his background in action roles, Daniel Craig appears ideally suited for the part of Sgt. Rock. However, it’s important to note that this casting is not yet verified by reports from Deadline. Keeping a watchful eye on future updates would be wise.
