James Gunn Hints at the Return of Characters From This Cancelled DC Movie

A recent social media post by James Gunn, the head of DC Studios, has sparked excitement that a previously cancelled DC project might be revived. Gunn, known for directing Guardians of the Galaxy, is now leading DC’s movies and TV shows. This change comes after a long period of instability for the superhero franchise, which saw several projects get scrapped.

As a film fan, I remember hearing about a live-action Wonder Twins project that HBO was developing with KJ Apa and Isabel May. It was actually scrapped over three years ago, but recently, there’s been some buzz that it might be getting a second look – a lot of fans are hoping it’s true!

DC Studios head James Gunn recently shared a picture on Instagram that’s got DC fans talking. The photo features the Wonder Twins and their pet monkey, Gleek, illustrated by famous comic artist Alex Ross.

DC Studios’ leader didn’t offer any details, but speculation is growing that a new Wonder Twins project might be in development.

A planned Wonder Twins movie, originally intended for release on HBO Max as part of the now-canceled DC Extended Universe, was canceled by Warner Bros. Discovery in 2022 because of budget reductions at the studio.

We haven’t heard anything about bringing those popular characters to the screen, but James Gunn seems to enjoy exploring lesser-known parts of the DC universe, so it’s still possible.

Zan and Jayna, known as the Wonder Twins, first appeared in the 1970s as part of the popular Hanna-Barbera cartoon, The All-New Super Friends Hour. These siblings from the planet Exxor have the unique ability to shapeshift. By joining fists and saying “Wonder Twin powers, activate!”, Jayna can turn into any animal, and Zan can transform into water in any form – like ice or steam.

Is Wonder Twins Happening Again At DC Studios?

Although James Gunn and DC Studios haven’t officially announced a Wonder Twins project, it’s still possible the characters could appear in future DC films or shows.

James Gunn has shown he’s willing to include any character in his superhero world, so it’s likely the alien shapeshifters could appear too.

James Gunn, now leading DC Studios, has already shown he’s willing to bring back projects that were previously dropped. Just a few months ago, news surfaced that he was working on a second try for a Strange Adventures series.

This follows Warner Bros.’ earlier cancellation of a Strange Adventures project, which happened around the same time they also scrapped the Wonder Twins movie.

With the revival of Strange Adventures now possible, a Wonder Twins comeback isn’t out of the question. It would just require a talented creator with a compelling idea. James Gunn already seems to like the characters – his Instagram suggests he’s considered bringing them into the DC Universe.
