Superhero movies and shows remain incredibly popular, and James Gunn, co-CEO of DC, has been busy building a new connected universe (available on HBO Max). We’ve already seen the first three projects from the first phase, called Gods and Monsters, but Batman hasn’t appeared yet. Gunn recently explained that he’s taking his time before introducing the character to the big screen.
Over the years, DC movie fans have witnessed several actors portray Batman, like Ben Affleck and Robert Pattinson. Many assumed he’d be a key early member of the new DC Universe, but James Gunn recently explained to Rolling Stone that he’s carefully considering how to incorporate the iconic hero. He said:
Batman needs a clear purpose within the DC Universe. Simply making a Batman movie because he’s a popular character isn’t enough. This Batman should be distinct from the version in ‘The Batman,’ but also avoid being overly silly or campy – that’s not the direction I want to take it. I’m currently working with the writer to develop a compelling reason for his existence in this new universe and ensure we can bring that vision to life.
I think James Gunn’s approach to bringing Batman into the new DC Universe makes a lot of sense. A lot of us are excited to see him show up, but Gunn is wisely holding off until he has the perfect story for the character. He wants to do Batman justice and definitely isn’t planning on repeating the style of those older, campier Batman films – and that’s a good thing!
The initial list of DC Universe projects included a film called The Brave and the Bold, planned as a Batman story featuring his son, Damian Wayne, as Robin. Although James Gunn, the director of Guardians of the Galaxy, suggested he’s developing his vision for Batman, he also hinted that the storyline involving Damian Wayne as Robin might not happen.

HBO Max offers streaming access to DC Comics content – including the DCU, DCEU, and classic titles – as well as a wide range of movies, shows, and documentaries. Plans begin at $10.99 per month with ads.
During the same interview, James Gunn also discussed his desire to create a fresh and unique version of Batman for the DCU, acknowledging the challenge of doing so given the numerous live-action Batman films that have already been made. He explained that:
It feels like every possible Batman story has already been explored, especially considering how frequently he appears in DC Comics over the last three decades. He’s undeniably the world’s most well-known and popular superhero. While his complexity is a big part of his appeal, constantly seeing Batman can also make the character feel stale. This raises the question: how do you create a new Batman story that’s genuinely engaging?
We’ve seen many Batman films, including countless depictions of Bruce Wayne’s parents’ death. James Gunn, now overseeing the DC Universe, wants to avoid repeating familiar ground and ensure the new version of Batman offers a fresh and original story that won’t bore audiences.
The next DC film scheduled for release is Supergirl, coming to theaters on June 26th, 2026. We’re still waiting for updates on plans for Batman and The Brave and The Bold.
