James Gunn explains Superman trailer’s bold opening
As a lifelong fan of Superman, I must admit that the new trailer has left me both intrigued and slightly worried. Seeing our beloved hero at his weakest is certainly a departure from the invincible, bullet-proof Kryptonian we’re used to, but it adds an element of realism that I can appreciate.
You may have imagined various possibilities for how the Superman trailer would begin, but it’s unlikely that you’d guess the renowned DC superhero would appear in a weakened state.
At last, we’ve gotten our first glimpse of James Gunn‘s reimagining of Superman, as portrayed in the debut trailer. It begins with the Man of Steel plummeting to the earth, visibly injured and battered from an unspecified clash, clearly not at his best.
He seems completely dependent on Krypto for any movement, as he doesn’t appear to be heading towards any major world-saving missions anytime in the near future.
At a sneak peek gathering for the movie Superman, which Digital Spy was present at, Gunn clarified the reasoning behind the daring beginning. “I believe it was crucial to show that he’s facing something that can harm him,” he explained.
Seeing him in a vulnerable state, they exclaim, ‘Wow, indeed.’ This is often the reaction people have when they watch the trailer, saying, ‘Oh my goodness, I’ve never seen that before.’ So there’s a hint of blood trickling from his mouth, you wonder where it’s coming from?
Fortunately, Superman can count on Krypto for assistance, however, Gunn hinted that the superhero dog might not be as spotless as he seems in the preview.
In the movie, it might seem like Krypto appears to be a superior dog in the trailer compared to how he is portrayed in the film itself, as he turns out to be quite a disappointing dog, he joked. Despite his shortcomings, you still find yourself liking him because he’s a dog and there’s an inherent charm to that, but he’s indeed not a very good dog.
In his conversation, Gunn didn’t specify the identity or source of the circumstances surrounding Superman, but hinted that the upcoming film will delve into the character’s true identity and the ideals he embodies.
As a devoted admirer, I’d like to highlight an essential aspect of the film – the protagonist’s heritage. His ancestry is deeply woven into the narrative fabric, and the way he intertwines it with his own life journey is truly captivating.
Although Superman hails from another planet, he remains remarkably human in essence, which sets him apart in a unique manner. It’s not just his superpowers or his origin that make him significant; it’s his character that truly matters.
The essence lies in understanding him, his decisions, and these aspects are evidently portrayed in the movie. However, there’s no attempt to hide or downplay the fact that he is an extraterrestrial.
Prior to the trailer going live, Gunn also justified the inclusion of Superman’s red briefs in the upcoming film.
Superman is released in cinemas on July 11, 2025.
